The Marriage of Maximinus Regulus and Livia Libana

Outside the temple of Jupiter in the forum, Lucius has prepared for the marriage of his daughter to Praetor Regulus. Of course, every senator had been invited and although not a public event, patrician status lent some flare of a festival-like atmosphere. The ceremony was short- Maximinus would simply deliver a pre-arranged list of formal declarations of the rights and virtues of women, and particularly his wife. Livia would then be delivered by Lucius and promise to remain faithful and to produce children. This ordinary wedding would be punctuated by a large feast. After the ceremonies the wedding procession would then meet in the gardens of the groom for a large feast. The ceremonies would begin shortly, presently Lucius waited for the arrival of his daughter in a litter. He greeted acquaintances as they gathered to witness the ceremony and wish the couple a happy marriage

Maximinius was within another room, dressing for the wondrous occasion. His little sister Flavia was off with her future father-in-law, Lucius, helping out in any way possible. He dressed in formal and best red attire. The Praetor looked at himself in the mirror, wondering about this day and how it would be so meaningful to his father...if only he were alive. The young Regulus sighed sadly and heavy.

If only Livia could have met her father-in-law...my father would've adored her greatly.

After sometime, Maximinius walked out and found his sister with Lucius. He touched his good colleague's shoulder.

Thank you again for making this happen, Lucius. My father would've felt honored to know that there were good Romans and Patricians still in this city of our ancestral home.

Lucius smiled and adjusted his toga, trying to straighten out a wrinkle

It is a pleasure to release Livia into your household, and to strengthen the bonds between our families. Livia will be out presently, then we can get on with the boring parts and then move along to the feast.

As Livia appeared in a pure white dress at the end of the temple mount, two stools were brought out for the bride and groom to sit on. Livia looked rather nervous, but approached steadily and sat, respectfully averting her eyes from the men.

I should leave you then, and wait for the priest to begin

Lucius went to sit in his appropriated spot and the ceremony began. The priest approached the couple and mumbled some prayers to Jupiter, then, Livia began to speak her vows.

"Quando tu Maximinus, ego Maximina. I vow to the gods to serve you humbly, and do hereby announce my consent to this marriage and love of my husband."

After this exchange, the priest produced a loaf of bread, and holding it aloft presented it to the Jupiter as a sacrifice. He then broke the loaf in half and gave each half to the new couple to eat, as a symbol of their unity. This concluded the short ceremony, and the witnesses applauded the newlywed couple. Lucius then stood and approached the new couple.

Congratulations, may Jupiter and Vesta smile upon this union!

Maximinius remained silent as ever during the ceremony. His eyes glancing at his young and beautiful bride before the priest turned to them, offering two pieces of bread. He eats it quietly and then smiles at the priest proclaims them as wedded to the assembly. His eyes turn and the Praetor takes the small hand of Livia into his and smiles. His eyes notice Lucius once they descend from the altar.

Thank you, good Lucius. My family is truly happy to be linked through marriage to another great Patrician family like yours.

The procession began, back to Regulus' villa, but Lucius held Maximinus back, slowing his pace.

Do you think it odd, Maximinus, that no other Senators have yet appeared at the wedding? Perhaps they don't care for this alliance, maybe the Senate fears the growing power of the few...

You'll have to forgive me if I assign political meaning to even the most trivial of matters, but I can't help but wonder.

As the procession grew more well wishers flocked around the bride at the head of the column. Some flute players came too close and Lucius waved them off

I respect our traditions, but I don't like to have flutes played in my bloody ears...

Eventually, he finds Lucius and Maximinus lurking behind the procession

After seeing Lucius and Maximinius, he goes to them.
''I have come to congratulate the young couple and ofcourse their families. Also I send greetings from the Pro-Consul of Graecia et Asia.''

Manius arives to the wedding. He joins other senators who have already arrived.

Thank you for your kind words, and yes, I am aware that Lucullus is about to hunt down those eastern pirates. I do hope he fares well. You will tell your patron, of course, that if Lucullus needs anything he will contact us. We would hate to have any...unfortunate conclusion to the wars in the east.

Lucius lowered his voice

It could prove very embarrassing for our side...

Manius approached Lucius and Maximinus.

"Congratulations. I hope that the newlyweds will like the gift. Olive oil from the Greek province"

''I just recently got a message from Publius. The Pirates are bold enough that they went to Athens, but there their Fleet will be destroyed.''

Such confidence is good in battle, but let us hope the Pro-Consul has made an effort to take a tactical approach, after all, ships are rather expensive...

I trust your patron has been kept well up to date on matters within Rome? We will need his continued support this year, we are not yet done countering the tribunes in their drive to waste our money on their own populist agenda.

Manius approached Lucius and Maximinus.
