Black screen and crash to desktop

Hi, first of all thanks for providing this great support forum.

I bought the game on disc last week but I haven't even managed to get it close to working. Here's what I've tried:

Uninstalling Realtek and NVIDIA drivers, using Driver Sweeper to clean everything, then reinstalling Realtek, NVIDIA and Intel drivers.
Disabling all sound devices except for the Realtek onboard sound.
Uninstalling the game and deleting everything I could find related to it (including appdata settings), running CCleaner, reinstalling Steam, and reinstalling the game a) from disc b) from a Steam backup c) by downloading it through Steam.
Running the DX9 and Visual C++ installers in the /redist/ folder.

All that happens is I see a black screen for a second, then back to the desktop with "Napoleon Total War has encountered an error."

Have you tried verifying the game cache even though reinstalling it? Steam misses the damnest things.
Have you checked the game's permissions through your antivirus/firewall/router?
Instead of relying on the Steam cloud backup, have you tried a fresh install of the game?

Hi irishron, thanks for your reply.

Verifying the cache says that 1 file needs to be downloaded, but after trying that (several times) it still doesn't work. I've tried adding permission for the .exe and turning off the firewall (default Windows firewall, by the way) but with no luck. I've tried deleting the game in Steam and reinstalling both from disc and by downloading, but that didn't seem to help either.

It's really weird, because Shogun 2 works absolutely fine.

Before reinstalling, did you delete both Napoleon folders first? Steam's uninstaller does not do a clean job.
