I'm sure this has been discussed at some point but a search of the forums didn't really yield anything relevant.

Anyway, long time TW player but just started my first campaign of NTW. Some maps have low stone fences/walls that I thought would be good to take advantage of. When I run the cursor over the fence the icon changes so I'm thinking "cool, line up everyone behind it". The unit proceeds to line up against the wrong side of the wall with their backs to the enemy, which kind of negates the advantage of being behind a stone wall.

Is this intentional, i.e., units of this period did not crouch behind walls for cover or am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks,

    Mike

hold down the right click and move the mouse around a bit to adjust where abouts and on what side of the wall they use for cover, it can be pretty fiddley.

Oh, someone is doing something wrong, but it's not you (hello CA! ). Units using walls for cover is just as buggy as most other aspects of the game.

LOL, bugs in Total War? I remember having to leave my computer on for days at a time with RTW because if you exited and loaded a saved game it would cancel every siege in the game! And don't get me going on units not climbing the siege towers against large stone walls, that never got fixed!

Anyway, thanks for the input. I'll play around a bit and see if I can get them to get on the right side of the wall. I try to look out for my troops, even if CA doesn't!

Na the walls aren't that buggy. Just like emptw1 says, hold down the right click and drag the mouse till the unit icons are on the correct side of the wall. I only figured it out a few days ago myself lol

Despite having considerable cover from musket/cannon fire the risk of having troops behind a wall or a wooden fence just by being there standing nearby or using it as cover directly (the crouching stance). Makes your units vulnerable to cavalry charges because the horsemen will be obliged to jump those obstacles with their steeds, giving them a more powerful charge against your troops. The same can be applied in your favor with your own cavalry, therefore you should always try to charge with your cavalry troops that are passing over a wall/fence or standing behind one.

Yes this is a rather humorous situation in this game ... one of the more ahistorical aspects of it. I don't see how standing behind low stone wall made troops any more susceptible to cavalry chargers.

A horse jumping a wall/fence is a horse you cannot control. It seems like the horse is likely to be bayoneted and the rider dismounted.

I guess but the mere weight of a horse whether the charge was succesful or not would have rendered a man or two incapacitated (their bones crushed) or even killed. Imagine over 60 horses... scary.
