Default World Press Freedom Index (2011-12)

So the press freedom index came out, personally I was happy to see Armenia at 77 (ahead of its neighbours), it's interesting to look at the changes of press freedom in Arab countries that were affected by the Arab Spring. For example, there was a significant jump in Tunisia's index. The US's index was a bit surprising, at a meagre 47. The top countries weren't that surprising in being there. Discuss.

What's there to discuss? Obviously all those conservatives that say that we are the most outstanding and free country ever are full of .

Other than that the list isn't all that surprising.

That. No suprises there, USA in 47 isn't anything unexpected.

I'm suprised that Nambia is doing so good though.

LOL @ Niger having more media freedom than Australia.

Good to see China, Vietnam, Syria, Cuba and Egypt continuing to be bastions of press freedom.

I'm also wondering why the US is just scrapping at around the top 25%.

Seems like most of the rankings, at least in the first world, are explained by "crackdown on protesting"

So countries with less protests got higher rankings.

The worldwide wave of protests in 2011 also
swept through the New World. It dragged the
United States (47th) and Chile (80th) down the
index, costing them 27 and 47 places respectively.
The crackdown on protest movements and
the accompanying excesses took their toll on
journalists. In the space of two months in the
United States, more than 25 were subjected to
arrests and beatings at the hands of police who
were quick to issue indictments for inappropriate
behaviour, public nuisance or even lack
    of accreditation

Yeah, but they might retaliate by bombing the Baldwin family.

They petered out like all grassroots movements tend too when there is no guiding force to get them truly organized, they could only stay passionate about it for so long until they had jobs to get back to and bills to pay. If they had translated into a more organized network and formulated coherent demands they would have some influence. They didn't. There is still a dozen or so people "Occupying" a chunk of my college campus but other than that...

Tell me about it. It was like December rolled around and they were gone.

And all those Occupiers were sitting there lecturing me and arguing into my face that they would be a deep-rooted movement on par with the 60s counter-culture. They don't seem to respond to my Facebook messages anymore. I guess they're kinda sour about being completely wrong.

The fact that they deranked the US for the reaction to OWS is completely politically motivated and retarded. Especially considering the rampant theft, violence against women, and destruction of property that followed behind wherever the occupiers were. They lost all legitimacy when they couldn't rise above being anything other than an aimless mob with no clear goal other than fighting the man.

Even more, I don't see a great deal of government repression of the press in the US. The media is just as responsible, if not more, for the rampant ignorance of facts.

The OWS did a lot of damage but one also has also to admit that US journalism has turned into sensationalism and not hard core journalism any more.

Depends; the American Interest magazine is top quality, PBS has some good coverage and there is plenty of quality material, if you look; I imagine that various programs, publications and stations may not have the same integrity and quality.

No kidding. About the only press repression I've heard about is internal due to political bias of the parent organization.

Personally I'd love to hear more of the 25 incidents they were talking about with OWS.

No reason to intimidate when they are already playing but the establishments allowed rules.

They down ranked the US for beating up journalists. The message was clear: Cover the protests and we break your arms.
