Do you ever help your allies?

I was just wondering.

Recently in my Scipii campaign the Brutii are being slaughtered by the Macedonian and Greek forces, so I sent an army over there to help them out.

I know that the civil war will make me regret helping them but I thought that i'd better not let them die before that happened.

Anyway, do you?

In RTW you have no "Alies "

Unless You roleplay or play with a mod that actually makes alliances WORK.. "Helping" allies should be restricted to attacking enemy cities that will not give you a common border with your "ally".

AI will stab you in the back as soon as you have a border.. Unless the difficulty is set to non-VH.. I don't know what happens then.. But i assume it's the same.

I always let my allies get steamrolled, because later, I can just easily conquer those cities for my own with just a couple of clicks.

I've always try to help out Carthage. Either by giving them money, leaving them alone, allying with them canceling out their war with the Romans, ect.

I've always wanted to face a strong Carthage.

^This. I usually try and help out underdog factions, like the Selucids. I usually do something to help the Greeks out, but that's a combination of underdog and my deep hatred for the Brutii. I don't know why, but they seriously tick me off.

Not in my campaigns. They get swallowed up by the Brutii or Macedon. Though once, they were actually able to mount an invasion of Italy, taking land from the Julii. Later they were, as always, swallowed up by the Brutii and Macedon.

In my ongoing Dacian campaign I've helped my Greek allies against Egypt. They were fighting, and getting their ass kicked in Asia Minor, so I launched an invasion to the heart of egyptian lands, and took their 3 main cities, so the egyptians are on the run, now. So the answer is yes, I help my allies, because I like to roleplay a little.

They're going to betray me, though: I also took Salamis and the Greeks have just landed an army there, for no goddamn reason.

Diplomacy in RTW is just plain stupid. And in M2TW as well. If you share a border with any of your allies they will backstab you. So having allies on the other side of the globe is great! And yes, I do help my allies even though I realize we will become harsh enemies later on.

Especially the factions like Macedon and the Seleucid Empire and the Carthaginian empire. They seem so helpless to me that I ally with them and give them money and help them through battles.

Allies? What's that? It's every man for himself. The closest I come to allies is trade. I trade with everyone until I build up enough money, then I slaughter everyone. I don't even listen to the Senate missions, I want them to be my enemy as quick as possible so I can gobble up their resources.

I'm referring to their crops, mines, roads, etc. But yes, their debt is an issue.

Its useful to have Allies right at the start though. (as the Romans)

I do sometimes prop up my allies especially against a faction that I'm not quite willing to share a common border with (as it usually turns to war with the AI attacking you before long).

I do, in Empire: Total War. If I capture core regions of an ally I give them the region. As well as use them as proxies by pumping them with money and tech upgrades.
