Default Tea Parties in TN demand removal of slavery from history textbooks

Jesus Humperdink Christ on a pogo stick

It seems to be another attempt to deify the Founding Fathers by removing any association between them and slavery. What the hell is wrong with these people? What really grinds my gears is how they are trying to put Jefferson Davis and Abe Lincoln on equal footing. This is a lightning rod for barely educated, racist yokels to spew their hate and ignorance. What's really scary is I might be teaching their future kids when I'm a professor. Perhaps it would be best to emigrate, or at least stay the hell out of the South?

You simply cannot whitewash history and remove the ugly parts. History is here to stay, and no amount of rhetoric can change the facts.

Is that the only type of freedom, is there a freedom with less overweight rednecks?

Got another source? There's something strange about the way it's written...

If true, this is retarded of course. Though, to be fair to the yokels, Lincoln really wasn't all that much better than a slave owner. At least not like people think of him now:

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."

    Okay, here's another source. http://www.salon.com/2011/01/13/foun...see_tea_party/

That pre-war quote just shows that he was a man of his times, but he has many other quotes that show he became very committed to abolition during his presidency. The bottom line is they are putting Abraham Lincoln on equal footing with the treacherous, illegitimate leader of a failed insurrection.

If this is true, then it is completely retarded and must not succeed. Such historical revisionism should not be allowed to succeed.

Way to over generalize the actions of a few groups of people in one state, to the entire 300 million plus population.

    Good job!

aside from the title and the writer's spin i saw nothing in their suggestions that said to not mention slavery or that they were slave owners, only that more emphasis should be given to their virtues than their vices. This would go in line with older more traditional teaching instead of the new age scandal teaching resembling tabloid magazine articles.

which is in contrast to someone like tamer the lame who in the older history books was portrayed as a horrible villian but now is painted as the saviour of christianity due to his noble campaigns against the Ottoman's.

If anything the article's writer's opinion and the opinion of the Tea Party members demonstrates a conflict between two extremes. The writer's belief system is that more emphasis should be given to someone such Thomas Jefferson's sex scandal instead of his major political contribution to the forming of the United States. Or to George Washington's anger fit's and his abuse of the English Language over his role as first commander and chief.

I sorry, I did not realize that the state of Tennessee and Texas spoke for the Union. Or were even a remote valid indication of the American public's view on the issue.

    My bad.

Left wing sources aside, there has been a shift to the left in text books since I was a child, not unsurprising based on the make up of the teachers unions, and a gradual demonization of the founding fathers. This is obviously a reaction to what had become very one sided teaching at times. Both a retarded but only the right gets called out for it.

Wasn't the tea party supposed to he libertarian and therefore hands off? Just goes to show they are the same old racist and bigot neocons.

I agree with Phier they are having a reaction but are going overboard here.

What does slavery have to do with the left? I mean seriously the founding fathers were not saints but the left isnt demonizing them either. Some were involved with slavery and pointing that our to show they didnt create a perfect system isnt radical or un-american.

The right, according to the OP, is trying to remove slavery from the textbooks? I think that deserves to get called out.
