    Welcome to
~ The Daily Secession Informer ~

After a long time of unplanned interruptions in progress... ACW 3.0 is again in development at full throttle.

At first let me say a few words about our ACW mod.

As i see previous versions as good attempt but not fully satisfying compared to what we want to deliver, this upcoming release will be the final step to the goal - To create a full mod for fans of the American civil war.

And this are the keys for us:
    - highly atmospheric
    - highly historic
    - beautiful in details
    - challenging in strategic
    - and fierce battles

Thanks to all members, also the formers, we hit the first 3 keys very well till now.
With the upcoming release we try to improve them again and additional we will add an huge improvement in campaign and battle experience for you.

So whatīs this thread for? Who is "The Daily Secession Informer"?

Itīs simple. Here is the place for up2date informations about the progress to version 3.
Every time i have some new stuff for you, you will get a look at it.
It should make your waiting time a bit more interesting and also itīs a good chance for the team to get some feedback and suggestions.

For example the new (ingame) mod logo and working title of 3.0 as shown above.

    ~
Kind regards, shokh & the ACW team

As the main menu changed (will presented another day), there is also a new look for our loadingscreens.
There will be 6 different loadingscreens in our mod. This is only a preview, things can change a bit and ingame the downside will be covered with a black overlay then.

Version 3.0 will feature a bunch of new models, which will be more detailed then our current ones. Now you can see ammunition belts or haversacks, aswell as different kepi types!

Some examples of new confederate models!

Union soldier and non commission officer!

    Closer look at the kepis!

    A union general!

    And a confederate one!

    Finally some new Zouave units!

And finally a work in progress picture of possible new unit icons

For those, who like moving pictures of the new units, take a look here:

Um, why? This is a historical mod and units had 2 flags in a regiment.
Empire total war just offering a very small flag. Its waving yes, but it looks very bad.
Our mod has 2 static flags, which are 2 times bigger and you have different regimental ones.
You wont get any flags for the irish, no 20th maine, no texas flag when you have the dirty little ETW flag

And you would like to loose all that historical feeling, just to have a small waving flag?

I understand, but this is a flag when it moves

Well weīve spoken about it and you get the choice in the final mod to use two big static flags or one big waving. You can switch between this settings anytime.

This would be with one waving flag for example:

Itīs simple not possible by ETW to handle two weaving flags. So you have to decide between historic correct with regimental flag but static or a-historic but with animation.

Hope this solves the discussion for now and ever about the flags.

    Thanks for hearing me!
To be honest, I much prefer a single waving flag, a little less historically true, that two historically faithful but static.
With this choice we are all happy!

    You are welcome.

While we are working atm on the last steps for our units i will show you another main menu concept, please excuse the blur effects on the font it comes from the reduced size.

Great idea to start this thread. I'm a big fan of all your work and very eager for 3.0.

That said, if I may indulge in a bit of feedback.

The first picture looks too western/ frontier for me (the font and the wood planks), also very cartoony (reminds me of Nord & Sud, on ol' Atari). I feel a more formal/ sober image would fit better with the dramatic theme of a fraternal feud.

I love the title Blue and the Grey, it fits perfectly. The Title "Brother vs brother" feels redondant. What about "Brothers at war", "Nation divided" , "Broken Nation" ?

Love the Lincoln/ Davis loading screen. Feels very historical and immersive.

The unit icons are too cartoony, and remind me of Medieval TW I. However, I like seeing the differences in the uniforms and style of the units.
The General Pickett icon is nice and gives an additional historical feel to the game.

Besides that all the units look really nice and I can't wait to use them as cannon fodder!

Hinkle, not to nit pick but that isn’t strictly true. It all depends on the individual units at the time of the engagement. Most units had a National flag and a unit flag, many units also used a national flag with the unit sown onto it or included state flags. Units of all sizes often had there own flags but they most often only carried the flag of the unit as a whole. The flags each unit used varied through out the war and would range wildly from unit to unit while there was a set standard it was very much unit driven for moral and individual identification purposes.

Say if Co. E 33rd Va was fighting by itself it would carry its Co. flag but it most likely would not if it were fighting with the rest of the 33rd Va as a whole. Individual regiments most often would carry national and a regimental or state flag but may leave the regimental furled while fighting as a brigade. Often times Confederate units would only display the 'Battle Flag' while Federal forces would field national and regimental or state.

Though I have to say I prefer two larger fixed flags to 1 smaller waving one.

Two flags would be better. A state and federal. I'll take the non waving flags to be more historicaly accurate. But for the CS, I agree, one battle flag would be better.

Speaking of accurate, could you make it so the soldiers carry their rifles with the proper manual of arms? Probably not possible, but I hate seeing my federal troops shouldering their rifles on their left. Haha. Also it would be cool to have musicians and officers in the rear of a formation instead of in the front line. Again, I don't know if that's even possible.

Can't wait for this! Thanks for your work!

    Thanks for your input guys!

    @ nonopo

I also prefer the portrait background but it will not fit the rest 2D Stuff and to rework all of them would take very much time. But nothing in this area is atm final, we will see.

The Blue and the Grey is still the team and mod title. Brothers against brothers is only the working title of version 3 and not too rarely used slogan about this thematic. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brother_against_brother). But at least it should not be meant offended by me.

UnitIcons are always a bit annoying to make. To demonstrate the unit on this small place makes mostly the unit look a bit cartoon, yes.

    @ WarOfAges1776

Iīm not 100% sure but i think itīs not possible to switch the side of the weapon shouldered.
But iīm sure we canīt change the position of the musicians and officers in a unit.

I agree though the portrat of Pickett is pretty sweet, I really like the rank insignia crossing at the top. be nice to see a few difference general options from Army(Lee) to Corps(Longstreet) to Division(Pickett) commanders available. With portrats like that of course
