How do I play as one of the ones not listed?
I've read here where others are playing as one or more of the countries not offered at the beginning game screen. How do I access, for example, Thrace, or Dacia (sp?).
Thanks.

In your RTW folder, go to data/world/campaign/imperial and open descr_strat.txt. It should be fairly obvious what to do next. Move unplayable nations into the playable section. Keep in mind though, that the faction selection screen can't support displaying all of the factions, and if you make all of them playable, the rebels won't be displayed. If you want to play as rebels, disable any other faction.
Now have fun horse-archer spamming as Scythia.

Re: How do I play as one of the ones not listed?
I'm back. I made the changes, moving the unplayables to the playable section but when I tried to save it, I got an "Access denied" message.
I tried renaming the old file and using the descr_strat.txt name for my revisions but I then got a message saying I did not have permission to do this.
Any thoughts?

Where did you install the game? What Operating System are you using?
You probably don't have permission to save to the folder - which is why you're getting the error message.

Also check if the file is read-only. It installed as read-only for me. You can do this by right clicking on the text file (or the data folder) and then clicking on properties. If it's box is ticked, untick it.
If it's not read-only, it might be User Account Control (if you're using a Windows later than XP). I can't remember the specifics of how to disable it, but the windows help guide has good instructions on that.
If neither of the above fix the problem, just save the file as descr_strat 2, rename the original as backup, and then remove the 2 from descr_strat 2.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Edition. I installed the game wherever it wanted to be installed, specifically C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision

Re: How do I play as one of the ones not listed?
Just to finish up on this subject and with thanks to J.Philp for his(?) guidance, I went in to Properties, only to find that the Read Only was unchecked. With the help of my wife -- who is very good finding her way around a computer -- I went in to Security and found Access. By clicking on Edit I was able to assign myself Full Access. And that did the trick. I was able to save the file and when I loaded the game, there they all were. Including Scythia with its horse archers.

Click and drag the descr_strat folder out, make you changes, then rename it to anything that takes your fancy, then cut the renamed folder into "data/world/campaign/imperial" Then rename it again and called it "descr_strat"
