under what circumstances when adding new units will they fail to show up in custom battles. I cant see the unit soldiers but they are there and can attack/shoot. What I have done is add units from one mod to Third age total war. All the mesh and textures were added to the correct folders... i know this because two of the four units added show up in custom battles and the mod i got them from all four units showed up.
