Default Row over Indonesia atheist Facebook post

An Indonesian man who said that God did not exist in a posting on a Facebook page for atheists could face jail.

Civil servant Alexander Aan, 31, is now in protective police custody after he was attacked by an angry mob earlier this week.

He may also lose his job over his posting on the social networking site.

Atheism is a violation of Indonesian law under the founding principles of the country.

Indonesia - the world's most populous Muslim nation - recognises the right to practice five other religions aside from Islam, says the BBC's Karishma Vaswani in Jakarta.

Local media said a mob attacked Mr Aan when he arrived for work at a government office on Wednesday.

Police said that according to Indonesian criminal law, anyone who tried to stop others believing in a faith could face up to five years in prison

The Facebook page where he made his comments is now unavailable. Supporters of Mr An have urged police to release him.

So atheism is unacceptable in Indonesia?

I think people with views like that need treatment.

"Let's commit genocide on people living in countries with bad laws."
Yes, I think we have reached a new milestone here in the mudpit, we're this much closer to beating youtube's comment section in sheer stupidity. Congratulations people, let's keep it up.

I think it's horrendous you're more offended by someone's post you know immature and not serious, than you are by the fact people in this world are still jailed, tortured and murdered because of what goes on inside their heads.

If I remember correctly, Muhammed once once secured the freedom black slave who refused to follow Islam. He then stopped other muslims from killing him, saying that Islam "was like a furance which collects gold while impurities flow out".

Now, disregarding the terrible simile, maybe you would do better to listen to the prophet than support all muslims simply because you're one?

There are contradicting opinions on the death penalty for apostasy, Muhammad seems to have approved in most occasions (there has been an effort to find sources that don't support this however). Fortunately i think many if not most Muslims today wouldn't support enforcing it.

Question: Do you honestly think that because he made a statement showing disgust toward's another's view advocating genocide, that he automatically "supports all Muslims"? How do those two go together? At what time in that did he show positive support for one position because he showed negative disposition towards another?

I lost count of people egging on the nuking or mass bombardment of entire countries on this forum. If I'm more disgusted by the idea of carpet bombing Indonesia than one lone atheist being mistreated for being one then it's only natural. It doesn't matter if he was serious or not, who the hell jokes about things like that? Would it any more understandable if I made a comment about a second Holocaust? No it wouldn't.

I didn't say anything about this incident yet, you don't know if I condone or condemn this.

Ah, the moral superiority of the Western world comes shining through again.

Everyone should read the post quoted carefully, because it takes the opportunity to levy real criticism of another country's legal system, and values... and instead says something even worse. This is a shining example of defeating your own argument.

there is a sentient orangutan god... you cannot prove or dissprove that, that the fun part of religion. also i would definetly be a religious person back in the day if i could only geus how the world works, we gotta stop living in the past we know alot of crap these days. why do you need to beleive in a heaven or hell or any form of gods? for fuc-k sakes jesus, budha and maybe even muhameed were all similar not because of their 'divinty' but because the had a good message, a message of do good to others, don't be an as-shole, respect others, how cold anyone disagree with stuff like that? for instance look at the 10 commandments, one is don't kill. another is don't cheat on your wife, although im not religious i can agree there is a lot of non divine good in those statements... maybe if we didnt call c-rap like that religion we would respect and get along with each other as far as our human nature and mortality permits.............

You do realise Indonesia has a democratically elected President and Government, and is one of the most stable and successful democracies in the region, right? It's doing quite well on the democracy front for a nation that only had its first free election 20 odd years ago.
