Expendables to be PG-13 because of Chuck Norris

My hype for this film just dropped a lot.

The Internet was on fire yesterday with the rumor that Chuck Norris's involvement in the upcoming "The Expendables 2" depended on the film earning a PG-13 rating. The news stemmed from an interview Norris had with Polish outlet Gazeta where he claimed that he wouldn't be a part of the movie if it included all the potty language that was in the script.

Well, it turns out that the PG-13 part is actually true. Sylvester Stallone responded to the rumor to Ain't It Cool News and said, yes, the bad boys of action films are going to be toning it down a notch in the upcoming sequel. But that is not to say that the movie won't be as much fun as "The Expendables" was.

"The PG13 rumor is true, but before your readers pass judgement, trust me when I say this film is LARGE in every way and delivers on every level," Stallone said. "This movie touches on many emotions which we want to share with the broadest audience possible, BUT, fear not, this Barbeque of Grand scale Ass Bashing will not leave anyone hungry."

It's still not clear whether Norris was the sole reason that "The Expendables 2" was downgraded from R to PG-13, or just one of several factors. At the very least, Lionsgate must be pleased with the switch because this now means that the movie will open to a wider, younger audience.

Here's the original Norris quote as transcribed by /Film: "With 'The Expendables 2,' you have a lot of hard language in there that means that young people won’t be able to see it. I said, I don’t do movies like that. I didn’t do them in the past, I didn’t do them on my TV series. I said, you have to cut out all the language, hardcore language or I can’t do it. So they did, and Expendables is now a PG-13 film so kids can see it."

I would just kick him to the curb, instead of watering down the whole movie for one actor's self-righteousness.

the only way this movie will be good is if chuck roundhouse kicks someone in the face, exploding them like a balloon then turns to the camera and says

"Chuck Norris can delete the Recycle Bin."
or
"Chuck Norris can strangle you with a cordless phone"

Out of all people, I wouldn't expect it to be Chuck Norris to have problem with the language.

And I thought before reading this is it was dropped to PG-13 because of the childish Chuck Norris memes out there.

He is ultra religious and self righteous. You would have expected that if you knew that.


A lot of cursing to Chuck is a couple words during the course of the movie. Ass, , damn etc. The middle word is F.

Did The Expandables have a lot of swearing? Surely there was some but I don't recall it being memorably swear-full.

Sad news in any case.

God damn norris.

The main reason it's PG is because rated R movies are perceived to be hindered in their ability to make money due to the rating.

I'd say more truthfully that the blame here goes to the studio execs who are scared an R rating will lead to bad ticket sales. They want the teens to be able to go see this movie. Why? I don't know. Most of the guys in the movie I'd say teenagers haven't watched many of their movies. Outside of Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis, and Statham, how many teenagers can name more than one or a couple of JCVD, Li, or Lundgren movies? Hell, I bet most teenagers don't know what movies Norris was in. He's more of a legend nowadays to kids to tell jokes about his roundhouse kicks and such.

So, I'm guessing Stallone wanted to make his movie be kick ass and have some strong language in it - it's supposed to be a damn guy movie after all - and the studio execs were all excited about Norris being in it too...but then they started thinking too much about it. They thought, "Norris is in? Great! Oh, wait! All the kids like Chuck Norris because of his roundhouse kicks and jokes. We can't have him swearing in a movie that's rated R. We have to make it PG-13 so all the kids see it and we make more bucks!

Stallone or someone else needs to tell Norris and the studio execs to man up.

What i fail to understand is how cursing is worse than killing...

Of course in that case it will always have a career as an HBO show.

Chunk Norris is lame. I don't get his hype. His claim to fame was having his ass kicked by Bruce Lee. Sure, the Chuck Norris jokes are funny but he shouldn't be able to make producers lower the rating of the biggest action movie of the year to a PG-13 because he doesn't like a bit of cursing. They should've just dropped him from the film, I'm sure he needs the movie more than they need him.

Does anyone really need a lot of cursing? I mean, I'm not fussed either way. I often find that if a movie, a song, a piece of stand up etc can hold its own without having to resort to vulgarity it ends up stronger for it. If there'd have been cursing in it fine, I'd have watched it. If there's not, fine, I'll still watch it and probably applaud Sly afterwards for having pulled it off with his hands relatively tied. Looking forward to this film regardless.

And props to Norris for sticking to his principles.

For me my frustration isn't just about cursing. It's more about the idea of the movie being changed. PG-13 not only means less cursing, it means less violence and overall badassery.
