Default Syracuse falls without a fight. ?

I have a question on sieges. Playing as Carthage and I beseiged Syracuse w/a fairly strong army but the Syracusans army was as strong as mine so I decided to wait then out the 9 seasons it takes. But when the last season ended the garrison didn't sally forth for battle,is this supposed to be? I've played more MTW2 and Broken Crescent where the garrisons always sally. Anybody have any ideas.

Maybe they didnt want to sally.

It depends, if they feel they are far weaker they won't sally. (I think they base this on the autoresolve odds.)

I only very rarely assault a city, nearly always waiting until either a relief force shows up and attacks me or until time runs out for the besieged. In my experience the garrison does sally out at the end more often than not but just giving up is not that uncommon either. I have not been able to work out how the AI makes the decision. Obviously those inside the city get weaker every turn they are besieged but that is as true of garrisons that finally sally as it is of those that don't.

And don't forget the losses a besieged army takes over time. 9 rounds is a long time in RTW mechanics, it surely destroyed half the enemy army solely by attrition.

Thanx for all the good feedback on this. As a matter of fact, after I posted this question I went after Massana in another "starve out" siege and they DID sally out for a battle(which I won) but then the game CTDed on me when it was going back to campaign interface. I started this game before installing the 1.2 fixes - could that cause problems in this regard? Thanx again fellow EB warriors. PS- really am amazed at this mod,it blows away vanilla RTW.

Yes he was.I seem to have problems when fighting or attacking rebel towns because I had a CTD attacking a rebel Numidian settlement in N. Africa. Then I attacked again from the west instead of east and it worked great. I just want to make sure this mod is working right. I'm still learning these games and I cant distinguish between a computer/software problem or if its the game itself (sometimes).

1.2+fixes is the most stable version of EB, for any technical questions and problems, best read the Frequently encountered issues.

Crashes right after battles can be avoided by waiting on the battle result screen until the music stops (~20s).

Or you can play ALX. I never bother with anti CTD measures and I only get CTDs once in a blue moon.

I can confirm that. Using BI.exe also helps a lot; and having more than 2GB of actually used RAM for RTW (anyone with WinXP 32-bit and 4GB RAM look here).

Regarding sieges: Wasn't there a difference in how the besieged AI reacts when you don't build any siege equipment (i.e. ladders, rams...)? Like they mostly sally out if you do have siege equipment, and don't if you haven't got any? Or was it the other way round? I'm sure I read something like that in a guide sometime ago, but I just can't find the source anymore.
