Default Canadian-Gulf Oil pipeline rejected for now

    CNN Article

    Fox Article

    BBC Article
The Obama administration rejected a bid to expand the controversial Keystone oil sands pipeline Wednesday, saying the deadline imposed by Congress did not leave sufficient time to conduct the necessary review.

"The rushed and arbitrary deadline insisted on by Congressional Republicans prevented a full assessment of the pipeline's impact, especially the health and safety of the American people, as well as our environment,"
Its not canceled and the company TransCanada is adamant that the construction will still commence but this looks like a roadblock in the path to cheaper (and safer) fuel for Americans.

Of course he rejected it. He has a facile anti-oil fetish he has to feed. The administration is still not granting drilling permits in the Gulf.
"Every idea is an incitement. It offers itself for belief and if believed it is acted on unless some other belief outweighs it or some failure of energy stifles the movement at its birth. The only difference between the expression of an opinion and an incitement in the narrower sense is the speaker's enthusiasm for the result. Eloquence may set fire to reason." -Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

Really just political gamesmanship, the administration would likely have been sued if it had approved the project right now because of the extensive reviews required by law.

In the end it is likely to get approved. The companies stock even jumped as there was no environmental rhetoric in the Whitehouse response.

That being said, it was a clever move by Congressional Republicans, letting Obama approve it in a normal timeline would put the announcement in the middle of campaign season, and would be a great boost for his appeal to moderates. But by forcing Obama to act early, t put him into a bad spot. Either he approves at the deadline, it looks good for his opponents, and might bog down the process in lawsuits. Or he rejects and takes all the political heat about it.

Yes, all of this. I'm disappointed, but there are tangible reasons, and it applies to both sides.

Not that anyone did, or will read your post...

Do you realize that they could build an oil Terminal in British Colombia and tanker the oil to China ?

It won't take more than 5 years, and the Chinese would be open to finance it upfront.

Too late the second Obama started wavering on the pipeline a while back Harper was making negotiations with China.

I think his original plan would have been to wait until after reelection, then reject it. That way he can campaign about creating jobs without looking like a hypocrite. I think the Republicans were just trying to keep him from doing that so that people can see where he really stands before the campaign gets underway.

I do agree that this is essentially just politics. Obama is looking to environmentalists for support, Republicans are looking to oil companies. They're all just trying to get the people's vote and fill their pockets.

Obama needs to keep the greenies on his side until the election is over.

Wasn't the oil going to go to Latin America and Europe anyways? Also, haven't similar piplines ruptured as well, spilling up to 800,000 gallons of oil at one point?

If this is true this should bring down the entire outrage on this issue. Do you have any sources for this?

I guess it's for the better. Now, there is more time to find an environment friendly solution.

Why impose an arbitrary deadline on the issue? The deadline can always be removed and the pipeline can go forward after studies and necessary changes. There's always a heavy amount of government involvement in these projects (at a minimum, given the extensive use of eminent domain), and there's every reason for the government to be choosy about which of those projects it allows.
