Default Lacklustre conquest of the Aztecs

I've always found that when you sail to the New World you thump the Aztecs for a bit and then they just... give up. They stop training troops too. Has anyone had this?
And does anyone know of a way to make it a bit more interesting?

Also I think it may be partially due to the Large Stone Wall upgrade which no longer allows troop recruitment for the Aztecs (since they have no barracks). Maybe theres a way to remove this upgrade from their building tree?

    Thanks for any replies

No idea if you can mod out their large stone wall, but I'm typically a bad battle commander so I typically lose to the Aztecs XD it seems like when I get there with like 4-5 stacks, they have 4-5 stacks, so it's good. Then, three suddenly pop out of the woods...

Damn, I'd love to remove that upgrade... Ah well.

Ahaha yes I know what you mean, the initial confrontation is quite spectacular don't get me wrong, but eventually I whittle them down and they just fizzle out, quite quickly actually.
But when I journey to the New World I usually invest in a very advanced army. Since I usually play as a colonial power I go there with a good general, plate armour clad/upgraded weapon soldiers like Aventurier and dismounted knights + some Basilisk cannons and musketeers.
Couple that with some very heavy cavalry like Lancers or Conquistadors and those poor Aztecs get annihilated...
I've always had a soft spot for indigenous races and their struggles against a far more advanced enemy but it's a good feeling to be that enemy haha

The thing is about Aztecs, they have a ridiculous number of full-strength armies. Like 12. And thats before they start recruiting units.Even with advanced and upgraded archers, heavy infantry, handgunners and heavy cavalry, youre gonna need a lot of chaps to kill every last Aztec warrior. And you cant just retrain in cities, you have to ferry replacements and new generals ALL THE WAY FROM EUROPE. Which takes like at least 18 turns.

To take out the Aztecs means you need to expand your army considerably, commit to a LOT of repetitive battles, and concentrate your best forces in the new world, leaving you very vulnerable to threats at home.

I found it much, much easier/cheaper/better just to capture Florida, South America and the Carribean Island, and just build these up into trade cities. Then get a trade deal with Johnny Aztec, and swarm his land with merchants to rake in the cash from all that Gold, Chocolate and Tobacco.

    "Peccavi" or "I have sinned"

Message from British General Charles Napier to the Governor General of India, to inform him of his capture of Sindh, (I Have sinned/Sindh).

meh, with enough firepower you'll suffer very few losses even against 2-3 full Aztec stacks for each stack of your own. Basilisks and other similar artillery rake in a ton of casualties, muskets(of whichever variety you have access to) also get a hefty casualty count with their long range, than either pikes(pike and shot formations) or dismounted knights+cavalry charges from the rear, generally leads to very few casualties of your own to a mass slaughter of Aztecs. it's all about bringing enough firepower and being patient with sound tactics.
