    Default Suggestions for Unit Stats Tweaks?

    Hi there, I've found some units to be frustrating, so I decided to tweak them. I need suggestions for unit stats - suggestions for mostly game balance, but I don't want to stray too far from historical accuracy.

    Changes so far:


    All Phalangites with sarissa 'phalanx' attribute

    +1 defense skill
    -2 shield to 3
    ***So far so good, they are more vulnerable to missiles. Should I reduce this to 3? I think a value of 2 was the original RTW vanilla phalangite shield value

    All Chariots
    +1 HP to 3HP (horses), riders stay at 2 & 1 hp for Celtic bodyguard and Scythe chariots respectively
    Celtic Chariot -1 def skill, -1 armor
    Scythe chariot -4 armor, +2 morale
    ***so far it seems ok

    Rationale

    Rationale for chariots - with 2 HP for the horses, they still kinda sucked for their main purpose - running into infantry and disorganizing their lines. Usually, more than half the chariots would die before they could successfully disorganize an infantry unit. Now with 3 HP, they're much more survivable. I did a test with a chariot + infantry army attacking a fort. I defended the fort's main-gate with heavy infantry, and the chariot was actually able to push my infantry back and allow their own infantry to stream into the fort (I lost the battle). Without chariots, those infantry would've been slaughtered as they got cornered and squished together at the gate by my heavy infantry. Also, with 2HP chariots, they normally would've died and routed before accomplishing their objectives.


    All Nake Fanatics/Gaesatae
    -1 HP to 1HP
    +3 defense to 18
    +1 attack to 14
    +1 armor to 6
    ***This Gaesatate tweak change has worked great, and has balanced them out.

    I mainly wanted them to be more vulnerable to archers and javelins, as well as vulnerable to flanking/encircling due to the defense skill value not applying to a unit's rear. They still pwn in up close melee, but are much more vulnerable to missiles. Did some tests and in one-on-one battles, they beat imperial cohorts and first cohorts nearly every time. And this is after the 2 volleys of Roman armor piercing pilums killing about 10 Gaestates on average. Against elite units such as the Praetorians, the Gaesataes have a 50-50 chance of victory, not bad considering it's 60 vs 80


    Classical Hoplites
    with only 1 weapon
    +Short Pike attribute, thanks to TW Fanatic's idea
    +1 shield to 5
    -.1 spear lethality to .12
    -2 armor
    added .25 unit cohesion value at the end of "soldier" trait
    .8 is now the formation distance for all hoplites formerly with .76
    ***Based off of TW Fanatic's minimod that made classical hoplites awesome - short pike attribute and a shield value of 6.

    Classical hoplites can keep a cohesive, awesome looking formation instead of breaking into individual units like regular spearmen would. I'm experimenting with shield values of 5 to make it slightly weaker and make it proportional to other shield values after lowering phalangite values. Still virtually unstoppable from the front. When fighting in a city street, three to four units of elite classical hoplites can defeat almost a full 20 unit stack of average swordsmen/spearmen units.

    Non short-pike classical hoplites (2 weapons)
    added .25 or .3
    unit cohesion value at the end of "soldier" trait and tightened the formations
    of units such as the Celtic Arjos, Agema, etc to around .8

    All Elephants
    +1 HP
    3 HP elephants to 4HP
    4 HP elephants to 5HP
    -5 armor for African forest elephant 23 to 18
    -5 armor for towered African forest elephant 23 to 18
    -5 armor for African bush elephant 25 to 20
    -5 armor for African forest elephant 23 to 18
    -5 armor for armored Indian elephant from 30 to 25
    -5 armor for Indian elephant from 23 to 18

    In single player, I reduced the cost and upkeep of elephants. Also added another HP to 5HP for small African forest elephants
    and 6HP for towered forest elephants,
    African Bush elephants, and Indian Elephants w, w/o armor.

    Did this after increasing the chariots to 3. I think these increased elephant HP are ok, since RTW vanilla has them at 12 and 15 HP respectively. I mainly added the extra HP for survivability and to justify their enormous cost. Now half your "smaller" elephant types won't die and rout from only 1-2 volleys of javelins. It's only a 25-33% HP increase, so they're tougher, but still very kill-able. Also, it justifies the chariot HP increase which is now at 3. It would be weird, at least for me, if a smaller elephant and a chariot both had 3 HP. I wanted the smaller & larger elephant to be tougher so I added +1 HP for both...


    Sacred Band Phalanx

    Removed their 2ndary weapon, which was entirely useless due to its lower attack value and same lethality as the spear
    After removing their 2ndary weapon, I was able to add the short pike attribute. Now they fight as an awesome cohesive classical phalanx unit!
    I've decided to also increase the shield value to 5 to match the other classical hoplites.

    Rationale

    This unit's 2ndary weapon was useless, and Carthage already has a ton of elite units with 2 weapons. Carthage has units like the heavy iberian infantry, Iberian assault infantry, hand-picked heavy libyan-phonecian infantry, heavy libyan infantry, elite african infantry, etc - I wanted an elite classical hoplite unit instead of just another regular two-weaponed unit


    Thrakioi Peltastai & Thrakioi Peltastai mercs

    Reduced lethality from .26 to .165, increased attack from 7 to 8. Now it matches most other units with a one handed AP-weapon with .165 lethality.

    Cordinau Orca (Scordisci Elite Infantry)
    Increased long sword lethality from .12 to .225. Decreased attack from 15 to 14.

    Persian Hoplites (eastern infantry kardaka)
    Similar to the Sacred Band, I got rid of the 2ndary sword weapon which wasn't any more useful than its spear. Then +1 shield, -2 armor, -.02 lethality to .12, and added the short pike attribute.

    Shipri Tukul (Babylonian Heavy Spearmen)

    This awesome mercenary unit is underpowered.
    Added +1 to armor, and +1 to morale.

    For some reason, in the multiplayer edu, the Greeks don't have access to the Hellenic Heavy Skirmisher (Peltasti), I added Greek Cities as an owner in the edu. Also tightened Syracusian hoplite formation to match the formations of regular Greek hoplites.


    Roman Praetorian Cohorts
    Increased the custom-battle cost in both single and multi edus to 3533. (originally it was around 2000ish for custom)

    Roman Manipular Infantry - increased costs to values before EB v1.2
    I'm changing them back closer to their original values because they seem way outta balance in comparison to other units. Even if it is to portray Rome's vast manpower ability to spam infantry, I think that can
    be represented via campaign script or giving money to the AI.

    New Values:
    Early Hastati = 1258 cost, 314 upkeep
    Polybian Hastati = 1333 cost, 333 upkeep

    Early Principes = 1454 cost, 364 upkeep
    Polybian Principes = 1647 cost, 412 upkeep

    Early Triari = 2304 cost, 576 upkeep
    Polybian Triari = 2171 cost, 543 upkeep



    Want to change:

    Cavalry in melee.

    Another idea - cavalry fares poorly in melee mostly because of their size right? Because the horse + rider unit is so big, 1 cavalry unit has to fight like 3-4 infantry units at once when engaged in melee. Do you thinking doubling their HP, and lowering their defense & armor would make them more effective at melee while keeping them not overpowered like in RTW vanilla?

    Actually, what would happen if I gave cavalry unit's a mount value of 1 along with the unit HP of 1, instead of the unit HP being 2? Would that just mean they die twice as fast...or twice as slow?


    Has anyone tried elephants with lesser numbers and lesser cost? Is it even possible to have just a single elephant in a unit? It'd be interesting to have dirt cheap elephants...


    Has anyone solved the problem of giving the short_pike attribute to phalanx units with 2 weapons? When I did this, the unit would glitch or would never use the 2nd weapon.


    Btw, I'm having trouble with the Sacred Band Phalanx using the short pike attribute. It uses its spear as an underhand weapon, which causes some ascetics issues for some of the lines in close quarters combat. What is a way to fix this besides re-skinning

    Can you find any actual sources that show chariots successfully charging infantry lines and disrupting them without dying horribly? Chariots were useful as skirmishing units, as transportation, and as missile platforms. Rarely - if ever - did they actually make effective anti-infantry melee vehicles.

    They're already plenty vulnerable to missiles, so long as you don't aim from the front and let them stick that big honking Shield in the way.

    Cavalry have never fared particularly well in stationary melee engagements with infantry. If they stopped moving, they got bogged down and swarmed under.
    I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

    It was weird that in RTW vanilla, elite Silver Shield Pikemen only had 2 shield but elite Royal Pikemen had 5 shield.

    Well chariots are for disrupting infantry lines. I just want them to live long enough to either disrupt the infantry formations or actually instill fear into the enemy before disintegrating into wooden parts. As it stands now, the chariot is a huge unit so it can be attacked by like 10+ enemies at the same time. This causes it to die absurdly fast...

    With 2 hp, Gaestaes were invulnerable to javelins, and even laughed off Roman AP pilum. Unlike RTW vanilla, no other infantry unit has 2 hp either. Reducing the HP and buffing the def/armor/attack makes it still very powerful in melee but much more vulnerable to missiles. This makes it much less annoying when the AI decides to horde a bunch of Gaestate units to defend a narrow pass or a gateway. Now an AP-pila volley from a 200 man cohort kills about 8-10 Gaestates on huge-unit settings.

    It's annoying when cavalry gets killed by levies when they get bogged down. Anyways, I don't think I'll touch this one since there doesn't seem to be a good solution for it.

    how could you dare to reduce Gaesatae and Tindanotae HP

    they are given 2 HP to portay they are historically mentioned to rip embedded javelins from their torso and hurl it back towards enemies.

    *javelins and arrows in the back still works very good even with 2 HP

    Unfortunately, the RTW engine cannot accurately portray a Gaesatae ripping out a javelin from his torso, then bleeding to death 30 seconds later...

    if I were you, I'll just cut their numbers from 120 to 80, and make them need 2 turn for training, retaining the current stats, they are actually few in numbers and not that much available

    seriously, giving them 1 HP is over-weakening them and make them no different than uirodusios role-wise , at least with 2 HP they can really fought as frontline infantry

    I wouldn't consider the ;508 - Syrakosioi Hoplitai (Syracusan Hoplites) as unit fighting in the classical hoplite style. Their description says they had a less dense/classical style.

    These units have a second weaopn with special abilites, so it's not possible or desirable to give them short_pike (I assume you're aware of that as you stated yourself; it's only an additional info)

    Did you also do this for the ;450 - Kardakâ Arteshtâr (Persian Hoplites)? They also seem to have fought in a hoplite style and as the ;97 - HaDorkim HaQdosim (Sacred Band Infantry) they too have a normal sword as secondary weapon.

    All in all they seem fine as they are imho. Better than any other mod I've played. You simply have to take care of them in battles, so they don't get nailed down by spear units (or also ap-units in the case of heavy cavalry).

    ;442 - Cordinau Orca (Scordisci Elite Infantry)

    Reason: the unit description and the unit's costs suggest that they use a vicious sword that has a similar impact on the enemy as the 'barbarian' longsword, which has 0.225 lethality; I have the suspicion the 0.12 lethality was a slip of the pen by the team

    For Persian Hoplties, in the description is says they carry "long swords" - since its current sword has the same lethality has the spear, I'm not sure whether I should change buff the sword lethality to match other "long swords" or remove the sword and turn the unit into a short_pike hoplite unit.

    Hmm, interesting. That's partly my intent - to get the AI to use more elephants in my campaign game.

    Wow, I had no idea their lethality was so high. Yeh I think it should be nerfed. Their sword even has the AP trait, so that makes it even more OP. So I'm thinking reduce the lethality but buff the attack by 1 or 2? Or just reduce lethality and leave the attack as it is?

    Good idea, I will do that as well. It has a high attack value of 15. So I'm thinking buff the lethality to .225, but lower the attack value to maybe 14?

    So far I haven't used them in my campaigns or encountered them yet, but I'll take a look and compare them.

    For Persian Hoplties, in the description is says they carry "long swords" - since its current sword has the same lethality has the spear, I'm not sure whether I should change buff the sword lethality to match other "long swords" or remove the sword and turn the unit into a short_pike hoplite unit.
    I don't know what kind of sword an "Iranian" longsword is. Only a standard 'long-ish' sword or a real heavy longsword? I guess unless you find an expert, you can do either. A matter of taste I would say. Atm I made them pure dense-formation hoplites. Though I adjust my personal EDU every now and then, so it suits my personal preferences - mostly only fine-tuning here and there.

    Their base-attack is a every low 7 already due to their high lethality and ap-ability. Only less lethality (to the level of axemen = 0.165) seems enough imo.

    These changes are really minute fine-tuning. If you don't exploit using these units to any large extent yourself, there's actually no need to make these changes.

    Info on stat_cost from Aradan's EDU Guide:

    Details of a units recruitment stats.
    • [turns] : Amount of turns needed to train the unit. Max value is 244, anything higher will be ingored.
    • [recruit] : Cost to train the unit. Also affects the retraining cost.
    • [upkeep] : Price paid every turn for the upkeep of the unit.
    • [weapon_upgrade] : Cost to upgrade the unit's weapons (both campaign and custom battles). Affects the retraining cost.
    • [armour_upgrade] : Cost to upgrade the unit's armour (both campaign and custom battles). Affects the retraining cost.
    • [custom_battle_cost] : Cost to include the unit in your army in custom battles.
    .
    These are recent changes that I haven't tested yet / played very long with. So consider them 'pre-Alpha':

    I only reduced recruit, upkeep and custom_battle_cost (now that I realize that was unnessary) to 75% (x 0.75) and didn't change the two upgrade-costs, as the AI will hardly very often retraint it's ships and for the player these costs are not too high imho (and it's less work).

    For the turns I did the following to make AI-ships more common and atst not create an AI-ship-spam:
    - turns: 1 & 2, unchanged
    - turns: 3 --> 2 turns
    - turns: 4 --> 3 turns
    - turns: 5 & 6 --> 4 & 5 turns (these are exclusively strong pirate/slave/rebel fleets)

    Btw, can anyone tell me why the Polybian era Roman infantry were reduced in cost? The original recruitment costs for the Polybian era hastati, principes, and triarii were 1333, 1647, and 2171 respectively. Now they cost 1066, 1185, and 1524 respectively.

    I'm changing them back closer to their original values cuz it seems way outta balance in comparison to other units.

    Early Hastati = 1258 cost, 314 upkeep
    Polybian Hastati = 1333 cost, 333 upkeep

    Early Principes = 1454 cost, 364 upkeep
    Polybian Principes = 1647 cost, 412 upkeep

    Early Triari = 2304 cost, 576 upkeep
    Polybian Triari = 2171 cost, 543 upkeep

    You just doomed the Roamn AI even more, for a player theyre easy but for the AI the original values are still too expensive.

    Not if I adjust the script or use the console to add money to give them a bazillion bucks.

    When I was playing as Rome, I used the console to give Carthage 3 full stack of elites in Spain and 5 full stacks in North Africa.

    Besides, I have never seen Rome ever get wiped out in any of my non-Rome games since they're basically protected by water on 3 sides after taking Southern Italy.

    actually I wonder, why some people hates Gaesatae become unique unit with 2 HP?

    if it was because it was OP when played by the player, you can houserule yourselves to limit their numbers, but if it was because you have difficulties when fighting against AI who field gaesatae ouch

    you should try testing the difference between 2 HP and 1 HP units in melee, it was very different behaviour , and it was rather unrealistic to argue that 1 HP gaesatae with only minor attack and defense improvement is better in melee than 2 HP gaesatae - test this on melee vs melee without any missile involved *you can do it by setting missile ammo to 0 in EDU temporarily - and remember one thing, most medium to high end regular infantry in EB *in fact, almost all of one handed swordsmen* has precursor javelin attacks, making, effectively, the AI controlled gaesatae is no different, even worse, than other 1 HP infantry unit when you put your own infantry on auto-fire, and their 1 HP means they are much quickly fall in melee when against superrior numbers, effectively negating their role as shock troops

    I mainly wanted them to be more vulnerable to archers and javelins, as well as vulnerable to flanking/encircling due to the defense skill value not applying to a unit's rear. They still pwn in up close melee, but are much more vulnerable to missiles. Did some tests and in one-on-one battles, they beat imperial cohorts and first cohorts nearly every time. And this is after the 2 volleys of Roman armor piercing pilums killing about 10 Gaestates on average. Against elite units such as the Praetorians, the Gaesataes have a 50-50 chance of victory, not bad considering it's 60 vs 80
    I doubt you test this as Gaesatae AI vs your own controlled romans, if you are the one who control the gaesatae, this is without doubt, but the AI is allready crap and it will make the allready weak gallic faction AI weaker

    i suggest testing this as the AI controlling gaesatae, and you controlling the roman, put auto-fire on and fires twice to gaesatae line
