My army suddenly destroyed!?

I was holding a fort in Gaul territory for a little while. Then a Gaul army came besieged my fort. A move or two before hand, my general died (Also was the faction leader I believe, but I don't know if this has to do with the problem or not.) While my fort was besieged..my army just suddenly died off! I was not presented an option to go into battle with the Gaul army, it just died. Is there an explanation for this?

That makes sense..I didn't take that into consideration..I am so used to the AI going in for the assault when they besiege me..I kind of forgot about the hunger factor..

If you wait for the entire amount of turns with attacking or being attacked your army just starves. Sucks when that happens.
