Selling maps to the AI - does it benefit?

Are there any bad effects from selling your map to an AI faction? Does the AI see all of the map all of the time? Normally letting a potential opponent see everything would be bad, but if the AI sees everything anyway you should try to sell him your map as often as possible!

I would surmise that if they have underestimated your land claims and find out that you actually pose a greater threat than they first imagined, they might be inclined to 'pay you a visit' more often to keep an eye on you or even steal an advantage over you if you spread yourself too thin.

But then I might be investing a little too much gravitas in the vanilla AI

I find it useful to trade map information. I think the computer may technically be able to see the entire map, but giving and receiving map information only reveals who owns which regions. It won't show anyone your actual strength, troop positions, or even grant visibility in the regions. It won't really expose yourself to trade it, but the decision is up to you.

Both had little idea than anyone existed outside of their own boundaries...their fog of war was sadly permanent...

There is no real drawback. The AI knows how many regions you hold (as you can know if you look it up in the 'graphs')

Technically the AI dose have to 'see' a region to know it's there, but, unlike a human, it knows where the settlement is as soon as it can 'see' said region (any part, even a single 'square' of the border, or a piece of the coastline.) So if the AI is going to attack you, having map info or not will not help it any.

If the AI refuses you to give map info, you can just start a new negotioation and click "cede region" and there you'll have the list of their regions. Just cancel it when you're done.
