    Default Wondering about the A.I

Whenever i play medieval 2 total war, kingdoms or vanilla, the a.i always sends to deal with my full stack lots of little groups consisting of 2-5 battalions and never as a full stack on there own? They just surround my army with like a couple of units each side, i personally find this annoying as i cannot enjoy a good 1 on 1 army battle like you'd imagine, instead im either sending my army off in one direction then the other, or splitting it up several different ways.

Or just take a defensive position and wait for him to come to you and bring a second army along to cover your backs forcing the enemy to confront you from 1 side.
I am the shadow, and the smoke in your eyes I am the ghost, that hides in the night.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
    we shall fight in the hills;
    we shall never surrender.

    " The dark is generous.
Its first gift is concealment: our true faces lie in the dark beneath our skins, our true hearts remain shadowed deeper still. But the greatest concealment lies not in protecting our secret truths, but in hiding from the truths of others.
The dark protects us from what we dare not know.
Its second gift is comforting illusion: the ease of gentle dreams in night’s embrace, the beauty that imagination brings to what would repel in the day’s harsh light. But the greatest of its comforts is the illusion that dark is temporary: that every night brings a new day. Because it’s the day that is temporary.
    Day is the illusion.
Its third gift is the light itself: as days are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces the light, and brings it forth from the center of its own self.
With each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins.

The dark is generous, and it is patient.
It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice, that drips contempt into compassion, that poisons love with grains of doubt.
The dark can be patient, because the slightest drop of rain will cause those seeds to sprout.
The rain will come, and the seeds will sprout, for the dark is the soil in which they grow, and it is the clouds above them, and it waits behind the star that gives them light.
    The dark’s patience is infinite.
    Eventually, even stars burn out.

The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins.
It always wins because it is everywhere.
It is in the wood that burns in your hearth, and in the kettle on the fire; it is under your chair and under your table and under the sheets on your bed. Walk in the midday sun, and the dark is with you, attached to the soles of your feet.
The brightest light casts the darkest shadow.

The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins – but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back.
Love is more than a candle.
    Love can ignite the stars."

Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end.

    You began the war.

I am going to end it!

I've realized that too. Do what the person above says; cover a bridge. Be passive-aggressive and defend a chokepoint, defeat the enemy armies there while defending, and move up to the next choke point when there's very little of the enemy.

That, or download a good mod like Stainless Steel.

I play on Retrofit Mod + Grand Unit Add On mod, which I am pretty sure has the same AI as patched up Kingdoms. I get the AI throwing full stacks at me regularly, even early game after a few dozens turns. What's your difficulty setting? I use VH and I just read another thread about this same issue, lower difficulty settings resulting in campaign AI sending only small stacks out...

I play on medium/medium, just because i've never tried a harder setting. Im currently playing as egypt in the crusades campaign, and i have a stack on the way to jerusalem. It is surrounded by 5 groups with 1-3 units in each...

I play Stainless Steel, and they throw a lot of large stacks at me. Small enemy armies is something I don't encounter. They only attack with equal or larger numbers. Time to upgrade maybe? ;P

Maybe what he means is that during a battle (not on the campaign map) the enemy does not attack in a well coordinated continuous front. In vanilla even with Stainless Steel, the AI starts milling around, spending an annoying amount of time re-arranging its units and now and then sends a random unit off to attack you, they get smashed up, then another unit heads your way, it is often like that. It can be quite frustrating. I'd say play Kingdoms Crusaders or Shogun 2.

I play battles on VH and only see that sort of behaviour when I am attacking the AI from more than one direction or outnumber it and have some flank movements happening. Yes, the AI gets really confused if you attack with superior troops from more than one direction and just seems to mill around until you charge into his troops - often if the AI has archers they are still moving so they don't even get in a shot. However I recently attacked a rebel stack of four units with three stacks (but only two generals and a mailed knight stack as the command stack) so his army of militia spearmen and knights sort of matched my command group and the AI rapidly advanced onto my command group in an orderly formation, ignoring the other stacks. So I guess if you want the AI to mill around less, attack at worse odds!!

One thing I would like to see is that the AI turns off skirmish mode for good archers so they are really nasty to approach, instead of simply running away and only shooting at long range.

If you usually win battles you won't find VH much more difficult, just more fun, as on H/VH the AI will make an effort to flank you if it has enough troops. The AI gets better morale but it's not that much better and it means it sticks around a little longer so you are able to wipe out more enemies!! Alternatively you could use all those small stacks to train your generals or generate new ones by matching each stack 1:1 or less - makes each battle a lot more interesting when the AI has a chance!

Yes, it's annoying to be always faced by little stacks and the previous time this was mentioned the conclusion was to play campaign VH as well - it apparenlty doesn't reduce the amoung of money you get but does make your settlements more rebellious.

Get the Expanded Americas mod. You'll see the AI sending full stacks all the time.
Aztecs invading France? The Pope himself charging into battle? Challenging AI that brings the pain? Check out the Expanded Americas mod.
