Does anyone know the actual purpose of the <max_age_of_child uint> number in the family tree section?

I'm trying to workout a solution to the family tree size soft-limit which decreases child births or marriages when it reaches a certain size. I've heard vague theories about lowering this figure helping but no one seems to know what it actually does. Any help on this would be massively appreciated.
