Bigger battle map

I think the battle maps are often too small on one vs one, which limitates the battle possibilities and is also not realistic (since battles often take a lot of place).
However, when playing with several player, the battle map is bigger. So there might be a way to transfer this feature to one vs one battle
So is there a way to play with bigger battle map when facing just one army? Has anybody did this in a submod?
