    Default question about pikemen

I have a problem with units that have spear wall (phalanx) ability...they dont seem to extend their pikes forward, and instead just stand there with them lifted like normal formation and when i press the form spear wall button the just move about a little and then nothing...

anyone else having this problem? is there a fix to this, cause if it is broken most of the pike units are pointless anyway

Hmm.. They will lower them when enemies are close, or do they fail to do that as well?

They only lower their spears when you order them to attack, or when you put them in guard mode while they're standing still

tbh im just finding pike formation totally useless just for looks i know the formation increases defence but its leaving my FG and others open to attackes from the flanks, i prefer off wall formation and to order a attack, then they start mowing the enemy down.....

You use spearwall formation for your fountain guards? Bad idea FG don't have very long spears so spearwall doesn't do anything for them besides making them behave stupid in combat and thus become weaker

Consider them more like heavily armored and elite spearmen carrying two-handed spears

Play Isengard and use Uruk Hai pikemens to Rohan cavalry, thats just fun to see die to long pikes

The FG seems to have been modeled off of a Halberd unit (just guessing don't quote me), so spear walls are almost pointless for them. A proper pike unit can OWN anyone when in spear wall mode though. I usually have them at the center of my line, flanked by spearmen and reinforced by standard infantry. I find attacking doesn't work as well as it did for phalanx units in RTW

LOL dont start with pike formation in rtw lol, 4 greek militia units could hold full stacks off of elite romans lol if positioned at all the chokepoints entering the city.

Getting past those pikes are easy enough if you're the Romans though, just make an expendable unit run right through the spears. Quite a lot will die in that rush, but they'll get past the tips easily. Follow them with a group of low tiered swordsmen and you're set.

This works quite well against spartan phalanxes as well if you have a sufficiently armored infantry unit you can spare.

So what advice for Orc Halberds? Should I phalanx them and put them on guard or just charge them in?
