    Default geography_new.txt and geography_new.db

    geography_new.txt and geography_new.db ...

I wondered if anyone could explain how these files work?

When I upgraded from TATW 2.1 to 3.1, I suddenly had the problem that the game would crash, with an "unspecified error", every time I tried to play a battle. The campaign game worked fine, just the battles would crash whenever I tried to resolve a battle. Not even a custom battle with a few soldiers on the "grassy plain" would work without crashing.

So after a few experiments, I tried moving the geography_new.txt and geography_new.db out of the data folder. Now the game seems to work fine, no problems!

The question is: am I missing anything, any game content or features, by getting rid of these files? What effect do they actually have on the game - is it entirely graphical? That might explain it causing issues with my old graphics card. At the moment, without these files, everything seems to work as it should. Even the custom settlements look how they should.

(Fantastic mod, btw - the new settlements are a joy to behold!)

You can delete these files. The game will generate new ones. It should work just fine then.

You upgraded from 2.1 to 3.1? Sounds to me as if you didn't delete 2.1, but overwrote it? Better delete it before installing 3.1.

Ah, thanks. That's mostly what I needed to know. At first I thought the mod was broken, then I wondered if I'd gotten rid of any game content. Obviously not.

Poor choice of words on my part, that was. I didn't mean to suggest I overwrote 2.1. In any case, the installation creates a new folder - "Third Age_3" instead of "Third Age" as far as I remember.

You're right. I had both version installed at the same time and didn't experience any problems.

In the readme.txt inside Unpacker folder, it says that those files should be deleted before running the game. So, nothing is wrong with your game.

Deleting geography files will make some maps unplayable \ nearly unplayable, mostly mountain ones.

Just install the game properly and you'll be fine.

    Regards

P.S. Someone move this to bug reports please.
I have no memory of this place.

There weren't any obvious errors during installation, and all the files appear to be in the right place, with nothing missing. I've had no crashes since.

Next time I play the game I'll test some of the mountain battles. If I have any trouble with these, I'll reinstall and see what happens, then I'll let you know how I get on.
