Sometimes, I get a dialog, during the AI turns, asking form military assistance from an ally. I click yes, and it moves my army a few steps, but nothing happens. Is there an explanation of what it is actually used for?

What has probably happened is that the AI attacked your ally, then decided to withdraw when you agreed to support them.

That makes sense. I forgot that the AI is afraid of other AI armies on VH, even though they will always fight yours.
