    Archers,archers and more archers.

Sooner or later that bugger does go down it is just generally later.
I tend to just order all my melee units into forests to cover and kite it around with missile units and hope it goes down before i run out of arrows if that happens then u have to decide.
Can you afford to lose a lot of men?
How big a difference is killing it going to make to you.

I tend to just fall back then attack again with fresh ammo and if it still dosnt die i surround it with spearmen first and let them take the brunt of the damage and send in the shock troopers once its alrdy close to death to mop up.
I am the shadow, and the smoke in your eyes I am the ghost, that hides in the night.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
    we shall fight in the hills;
    we shall never surrender.

    " The dark is generous.
Its first gift is concealment: our true faces lie in the dark beneath our skins, our true hearts remain shadowed deeper still. But the greatest concealment lies not in protecting our secret truths, but in hiding from the truths of others.
The dark protects us from what we dare not know.
Its second gift is comforting illusion: the ease of gentle dreams in night’s embrace, the beauty that imagination brings to what would repel in the day’s harsh light. But the greatest of its comforts is the illusion that dark is temporary: that every night brings a new day. Because it’s the day that is temporary.
    Day is the illusion.
Its third gift is the light itself: as days are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces the light, and brings it forth from the center of its own self.
With each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins.

The dark is generous, and it is patient.
It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice, that drips contempt into compassion, that poisons love with grains of doubt.
The dark can be patient, because the slightest drop of rain will cause those seeds to sprout.
The rain will come, and the seeds will sprout, for the dark is the soil in which they grow, and it is the clouds above them, and it waits behind the star that gives them light.
    The dark’s patience is infinite.
    Eventually, even stars burn out.

The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins.
It always wins because it is everywhere.
It is in the wood that burns in your hearth, and in the kettle on the fire; it is under your chair and under your table and under the sheets on your bed. Walk in the midday sun, and the dark is with you, attached to the soles of your feet.
The brightest light casts the darkest shadow.

The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins – but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back.
Love is more than a candle.
    Love can ignite the stars."

Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end.

    You began the war.

I am going to end it!

Just withdraw from the siege when the balrog appears. OoMM sent him north and I never saw him again. Took Moria 2 turns later.

Javelins and crossbows work for me ? If you are Elves archers are your best bet.

Off-topic post deleted. A member is allowed to open a thread on any matter as long as it is relevant & cope with forum rules, searching before asking does indeed help but it's not compulsory, so please don't start nagging members that they should use the search function instead. Post something on-topic and then you can provide this suggestion in a friendly and polite manner.

I have to sheepishly admit that the time I fought him I just killed everything else and had enough men being slaughtered standing around him that the game counted me as in control of the city so after 3 minutes of my soliders getting slaughtered I won. But I didn't manage to kill a single Balrog.

The same rules apply from killing trolls.http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=262519

To sum it up, you not only need archers, you need archers with either high damage or ap (armor piercing). Same with infantry, you're going to need infantry with high damage, lots or armor and ap as well.

Since they're better than olog-hai expect it to be a much harder fight.

The biggest difference is that trolls count as infantry, while Balrogs are elephants. That means they got an area attack and send units flying by walking over them, so it's much harder to surround them. But yeah, crossbowmen or armor piercing skirmishers is what you're looking for. Or to put it differently: As High Elves you're ed, because you have neither.

And should your neighbour not return your wave

Do Elves have ballistas and catapults? Granted, you need some meat shields but I've killed Balrogs with ballistas before.

Well a thousand or so high damage, High Elven archers can definitely serve to soften up a balrog horde.

What I meant is that as High Elves you don't have that one unit that works like a charm, like for example the Riddermark Skirmishers killing Mûmakil with one volley.
