your choice depends on a number of factors. There are 2 basic types of notebooks DTR (desktop replacement) which are heavy, powerful and have crappy battery life. Then there are notebooks that are built for mobility, they may not be the most powerful things on the planet but are optimized for battery life and weight. Getting a Turion based notebook means you will have better battery life, while a notebook with an athlon will most likely be a DTR laptop. You will also want to make sure you have at LEAST 1gb ram and a decent gfx chip. Also keep in mind you wont be able to replace the graphics chip or processor (without a soldering iron, and a lot of balls)

Well what do you mean by building a laptop? If you don't know the difference between Athlon and Turion I suggest you just buy one. As for the GFX, the best one for laptop right now would be the 7900 and 7800, then a mid range one would be the X1600.

Well, just a tip for you, Alienware sucks. They rip off people pretty badly. Check this thread:

I would get a Pentium D 805 and overclock it. It costs you $130 and can reach 4 GHz. Get a good cooling solution (ie a large CPU cooling fan) and motherboard (for overclockers, like ASUS, Gigabyte or DFI).
