Amour?
Does anyone else have a problem with armour?
Only the third level of blacksmith seems to do anything, and that one only adds one armour to light troops.
Are the fifth level armourers even possible?
Leather tanners and blacksmiths do absoloutely nothing playing as gondor

That's because Gondorian troops are heavier armored than other factions'. Try the Elven or Orc factions, most of their light/medium troops can be upgraded with a blacksmith.

As most Gondor units have at least chainmail, you will need an armourer (smith level 3) to upgrade them.

For a forum full of foreigners, that's some pretty broken French...
In 1.4 RR/RC, the Elves can also get the Full Plate armourer, which makes sense, since the Elves were good craftsmen.

For Gondor, if you upgrade the Armour of the infantry twice (+4def) they become some of the best non-elite troops ingame. Besides they look awesome.

Not all blacksmith levels are applicable to all units and some factions make better use of certain bs levels more than others.
