Icon8 timurid open battle unspecified error

I am playing Medieval 2 white label no modifications just put the games disc in and played. Any time i get sieged by the timurids as soon as i start the battle the game crashes. I havn't had problems with any of the other factions.

I am playing as France in a long campaign and have already won the campaign and elected to play on.

I have managed to fight the Timurid in open battle when I attack them in the open with no problems, and one time when i was sieged but the Timurid forces did NOT contain any elephant units.

Is this a bug, and if so is there a patch that can fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you read my post inthe other thread I posted in? Yes, it's a bug in the game. One of the mods may have fixed it but it was never fixed by CA.

Timurid elephant cannons? Bugged. you need to play a mod to get around it.

    Thanks.

Do I need a mod or one of the patches? Don't want to fiddle with my vanilla game too much

    Ehh lol?

No he/she is not needed to install a mod.
He/she can simply modify a textfile that tells the game which units should spawn in the game.
By simply adding a ; before everything that says "elephant", then all elephants are disabled.

Where to find the textfile: Wherever you have installed the game/Medieval II - Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign
First you gotta turn of the write protection in the document by going into properties.
Just uncheck the write protection box.
Then you open the imperial_campaign document with notepad.
Inside the notepad, press ctrl+f and you will get a search bar.
Search for "elephants" and add a ";" sign before every line with elephants in it.
I'm not sure if the error is generated by elepthants without artillery, but I usually disable all elephants just to be sure.
Save the document where the original document was found in: /Medieval II - Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign

Hope this helps and that you don't have to install a bunch of crappy mods when you don't have to.

Just to be clear, you should overwrite the original imperial_campaign document with the new imperial_campaign document, where you have disabled the elephants.

And seriously guys, this is like the oldest way to get around this issue.
The bug has been there since like 2005.
Try to keep up to date if you are going to be "moderators".
No one is needed to install crappy mods just to play the game.
Editing documents in the game-directory usually fix most problems with any game.

Download, install and play a mod. Most mods now are Kingdoms mods and will not ruin your vanilla copies.

No, a patch won't do it because CA never fixed it.

I don't know how many have kept the Timurids in. Try any of the Kingdoms mods if you have Kingdoms installed.

The only real chance is in open country, not in a siege, and there are no patches for it. Read your other thread.

3 similar threads merged. Don't make multiple threads on the same issue please.
It's a bug and you can get past it via modding it. Either mod the EDU file for the Elephant Artillery unit or just auto resolve it.

I can provide the fix if you want it.

    Edit
There's already a fix for it. Download it from here. Btw do you mind uploading the saved file in a zip here? I could use it for testing something.

What you have stated is quite wrong and a "moderator" has nothing to do with it. One needs to be a modder for this and i know what i'm talking about here. You on the other hand don't even know a difference between a folder and a document. Imperial_campaign is a folder while the file\text document you're talking about is campaign_script.txt.

Your method removes the units completely from the spawn which actually weakens the army and reduces the challenge offered by a Timurid army. What i have provided is a simple means to correct the CTD issue without having to delete anything from game. So your solution is actually not helpful.

This should be posted in the Technical Help subforum.

Have you used the file unpacker recently? If yes, did you read the ReadMe file? There are two files which will cause a crash when entering a battle. They need to be deleted after unpacking.

If you haven't unpacked your files, try creating an error log and uploading that here. You can do this by going to your main Medieval 2 install folder, finding the file called medieval2.preference, opening it up, and adding these lines:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    [log]
    to = logs/system.log.txt
    level = * error

Then go back into your game, go into a battle, and when the game crashes, an error log will be created in your Medieval 2 install folder.

First of all, Yes, this belongs in the technical help forum - if you donīt get the replies you need there, send a message to Irishron or some other moderator. They always know what to do

Secondly, I remember myself getting that game crash when I first bought the game - I believe it had something to with the computer I played on, or the patch, but it was really long ago so I donīt remember clearly. Either way, I remember getting the latest patch and tweaking some with my computer to make it work - as I said, you really should wait for help from the Technical Help guys.
