    Is this unit safe to remove from the EDU?

    Yes it. You mey erase every unit you want, but you need to remove proper entries in EDB, descr_strat and eventually in descr_rebel_factions

    are these historical character units used in the grand campaign?

    Duke William, Rufus, King Harold, King Henry, King Francis, King Richard, King Guy, Saladin, Hernan Cortes, Bohemond of Taranto, Qilich Arslan etc

    If they are from vanilla you may to erase them without consequences. If they are from crusaders you need to erase them form campaign_script.

    no i use a heavily modified retrofit campaign, I'd like to add some more units and was wondering if anyone had encountered any problems with removing them.

    if its mercanery also u can delete from descr mercaneries.u dont need to delete from modeldb.

    They are from the Historic battles Agincourt, Tannenberg etc, if you don't play them you can delete the units.

    yea I thought as much, I don't play those historical battles. I removed them and my mod works fine by all accounts.

    Yes and if you want to use the historical battles as well then you mod the descr_battle.txt file and remove the unit from there also.
    ....Data\world\maps\battle\custom\*Historical Battles*
