Battles don't work at all

Good day, i have some problems with my TATW 3.1, battles don't work at all. It is not only the custom settlements that doesn't work, but also normal ones like 'Grassy Plain'. After the pre-battle loading screen you can just see my men, the horizontal mountains and the sky, but the whole ground just looks like a huge white sea, and then the error message pops up: 'Medieval 2 Total War has encountered an unspecific error and will now exit'.

I have tried first to re-install the game, the same problem was still there. Then i downloaded the files again and installed the game a third time, still the same problem.

Is there anything i can do to fix this problem, could there perhaps be some files missing? Please help me if you can, I've waited ages for this game now and would be very happy if i could get some help.

When this (rarely ) happens to me, I make SURE I erase ALL (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL) the previous files installed. Try defraging your hard disk. Tune your system up. Sounds like it's a system thing. Third Age 3.1 worked for me just fine.
