Barbarian Factions and economy

I have played this game for many years now and to be honest I have never once played a barbarian faction. I love the military and management part of the game equally so the prospect of playing factions with zero tech and crappy economies sounds boring.

Do the barbarians really have bad economy? Non-barbarian factions can get around 10-12k from athens some 100 turns into the game if all of asia minor and ionia is under your control, what can I hope to get from the barbarian factions? I want to play germans for their berserkers

It's harsh in the beginning. I'm playing as Spain, but I've racked income up incredibly easily.

Exterminate my friend. Exterminate large towns < minor cities < Large Cities < Huge cities
You run low on cash beginning because you have no Mediterranean Sea trade.

Take Rome and you're fine.
Take Athens even better.
You'll be fine~

They have a very different style of gameplay. Whereas the southern factions are able to focus on economy if they wish, the barbarians are forced to rush the south.

Simply put, you HAVE to move very quickly and take the richest cities you can reach, exterminating everything on the way there. That will give you the money you need to conquer.

also don't worry about traders (except britons), rather build farms to make your money. Since the barbarians don't have a lot of sea trade then most trade they do will be over land, and they can only build dirt roads. Farms on the other hand give you good money and also raise your population.
