    Default Good Irish units?

Playing Britannia as Ireland, I'm kinda having a hard time. The battles I fight are getting more costing to me because my units are simply bad. The heavy infantry (Muire, Ulster Swordsmen) units are small, I have to rely on mercenaries (Galloglaich). I don't have spearman (only could recruit on a city I took from England), so my Ceitherne always suffer losses to kill the enemy cavalry. Ridire are bad too, the merc cavalry I recruit is better than them.

Is there a time on the campaign when I will be able to recruit better units?

Calivermen, once you can recruit them, will help level the battlefield for you. You have to remember though that any force in the Britannia campaign other than England is something of an underdog for various reasons. You have to expect your hordes of enthusiastic light troops to take losses against the armored infantry of England.

    Whatever are you talking about?
Ridire are versatile and capable - they have relatively poor stats, but with some decent maneuvering you can easily defeat almost anything with them.
And the Muire are the best infantry in the entire Brittania campaign - they have low numbers, which is a drawback, but they can hack their way through anything.

Use some of those standard swordsmen (I forgot the name, those viking descendants with sword and shield) as mainstay infantry - with Muire mixed in to push the enemy back and Ulster Swordsmen as chargers - and Ridire to attack the enemys´ light infantry and archers.
Use Horseboys to pepper the enemy heavies, and then charge in and finish the survivors off with a nice charge in the rear by the Ridire.
The Irish have over-all poor troops and low numbers of quality troops, but they are damn capable nonetheless.
Remember that you are playing a faction which, historically, relied almost as much on random volunteers for its´ armies as trained soldiers.

Looks like you can get the Lord's Retinue (knight unit; requires highest stable you can build in Citadel), and Calivermen (musketeer; requires 2nd highest barracks in huge city).

Irish can recruit spearmen - the Cliathairi

    Thanks for the help.

Since I'm more used to low numbers and better units, and not the contrary, it's taking some time for me to fully adapt to the Irish. But I gotta admit that the campaign with them is being a lot of fun (they look like a bunch of savage barbarians).

On a serious note, playing as Ireland you should have such a good economy units are no longer a problem. Once you get calivermen, you should have no difficulty.

And that's just why it is fun to win with them.

Ireland has always seemed easy to me even on vh/vh.
I just made sure to fight on open field then picked my terrain.

Against high infantry army's i lured them into mountains then my missiles units rained death and the English were so tired when they reached my line they got slaughtered.
    High cavalry same again.
High missile i took forest terrain and then just swarmed them on all sides.
Once you secure Ireland its over you have huge income so just take ur time and get ur best men then pick ur point and invade.
( I like to take all the islands first and remove the vikings except the small base in scotlands then invade through wales. ).
I am the shadow, and the smoke in your eyes I am the ghost, that hides in the night.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
    we shall fight in the hills;
    we shall never surrender.

    " The dark is generous.
Its first gift is concealment: our true faces lie in the dark beneath our skins, our true hearts remain shadowed deeper still. But the greatest concealment lies not in protecting our secret truths, but in hiding from the truths of others.
The dark protects us from what we dare not know.
Its second gift is comforting illusion: the ease of gentle dreams in night’s embrace, the beauty that imagination brings to what would repel in the day’s harsh light. But the greatest of its comforts is the illusion that dark is temporary: that every night brings a new day. Because it’s the day that is temporary.
    Day is the illusion.
Its third gift is the light itself: as days are defined by the nights that divide them, as stars are defined by the infinite black through which they wheel, the dark embraces the light, and brings it forth from the center of its own self.
With each victory of the light, it is the dark that wins.

The dark is generous, and it is patient.
It is the dark that seeds cruelty into justice, that drips contempt into compassion, that poisons love with grains of doubt.
The dark can be patient, because the slightest drop of rain will cause those seeds to sprout.
The rain will come, and the seeds will sprout, for the dark is the soil in which they grow, and it is the clouds above them, and it waits behind the star that gives them light.
    The dark’s patience is infinite.
    Eventually, even stars burn out.

The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins.
It always wins because it is everywhere.
It is in the wood that burns in your hearth, and in the kettle on the fire; it is under your chair and under your table and under the sheets on your bed. Walk in the midday sun, and the dark is with you, attached to the soles of your feet.
The brightest light casts the darkest shadow.

The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins – but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back.
Love is more than a candle.
    Love can ignite the stars."

Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end.

    You began the war.

I am going to end it!
