The people that fall in between also get jobs sometimes, just not as often and not as easily, depending on what country you are in. The most society can do is try to provide equal opportunities for everyone as much as possible, to fight corruption and cronyism, and to make sure that those with the least ability still have an opportunity at a fulfilling life.

People either have to be the very best, being the 'smartest' in academics, plus some extracurricular 'skills' or 'talents', or
The most corrupted ones, using connections or political supporters to obtain the job.

Man owns supermarket and raises family and you can bet your ass his kids/neices/relatives/friends are going to get a job there without trying. Who hasn't seen that happen?

Nepotism is unfortunate, but impossible to eradicate: so you're best off merely networking to the best of your ability. I'm all in favor of rewarding personal merit...but then there's something to be said for the merits of skillful social navigation, too!
