I'm under the impression that a big part of today's stand-up comedians are trying to conceal their artistic mediocrity behind the coarser approach. One can no longer call himself a comedian if he/she doesn't make use of obscene language and racial slurs. Until a couple of decades ago, this sort of comedy used to be performed at private events, nowadays it's the norm. I guess it's easier this way to churn out new material if you lack the wit for it.

Depends on the person and pretty much their motivations behind it. Some are bawdy to go against the whole political correct stuff that many people grow tired of while others think obscene language is cool.

Hans Teeuwen said it best in a tv show when a moslima asked him about why he says things that are offensive to others. He said no one is forced to watch his shows and can just watch something else if they feel it offends them, saying he wouldn't watch something on tv he's not interested in either.

As long as it is funny I don't care. I am not easily offended.

I think it's rather narrow-minded to assume coarse language points to a lack of artistic merit or wit.

Clean, I can't stand dirty standup. Although, I must say I'm not too crazy about standup in general.

That's why George Carlin will always be remembered as one of the best. But then again, I consider him to be more than a mere stand-up comedian, he was a purveyor of truth after all.

As long as most of these people will jump on the bandwagon and use that kind of mannerism only because of the shock value then their act can be considered meaningless.

It is important how profanity and slurs are used. Using the n-word in a joke that is about schools is a stupid decision because it adds nothing to the impact. Using the f-word constantly because it is part of the 'character' is also stupid to me. How is the word contributing to the act?

I do not understand how people find George Carlin funny. Curse words are just words. They aren't intrinsically funny, and he never employed them in a clever way. He'd just drop them everywhere or talk about them, and for some reason the audience would giggle like little kids. His humour on social matters and 'observations' was dry as hell. Different humour for different folks.

There are plenty of comedians who use coarse language to its full comedic effect, like Billy Connolly and C.K. Louis.

But it's true that there are way too many ''comedians'' these days who think that just constant random swearing and saying controversial and obscene things is a substitute for actual humour.

Yeah, but is that any worse than Dane Cook and comedians like him, unfunny is just unfunny.

Yeah, but this is especially annoying because it's become a trend to be insulting and controversial without any humor or wit to it. The Roast Of and ''comedians'' like Jim Jefferies and Bob Saget being the epitome of this. They're so obsessed with being ''politically incorrect'' (like too many these days) that they're just completely unfunny.

Of course they suck, but that's because they suck, not simply because they're vulgar, a far higher percentage of "clean" comedians are crap.

I think adding vulgarity to one's repetoire is is comparable to a painter adding a broader spectrum of colour to his/her pallette: if the artist is skilled the added spectrum will improve his/her work, if the painter is unskilled his work would just be an eye-aching mess. Like-wise a skilled artist with a limited pallette can thrive within the boundaries he/she makes (like rembrandt/Stewart Francis, it requires immense skill, fore-thought and is incredibly rare), an unskilled painter with a limited pallette will end up with stick-figures, flat and uncompelling (Martin creed/carrot-top).

It varies on presentation and use really. Difficult to pin. Clean can lead to it being to dry but bawdy can get to be a bit repugnant.
A good mix is generally the best.

I'm not necessarily against course humor but I find comedy funnier when it doesn't rely on vulgarity. It can BE vulgar, but if you take the cursing out would it still be funny?

Mitch Hedburg jokes for example, he often cursed during them but they were just as funny when he didn't (like if he was on a talk show or something)
