What happens when AI gains 60 areas?

Byzantinum has been blobbing like mad in my current game, and no one in their part of the world seem able to stop them. Now they have about 55 areas and counting, and I'm Sindh so I'm too far away to do anything about it.

My question is: do the game automatically end when they reach 60, or is there an option for me to continue? (I can't remember). I want to know if it's worthwile to keep playing or not.
