Default Bad traits or "Why my generals are always fat and lazy".

Hello I have been playing this game for a few years now (about 5 I think) and I enjoy the empire-building / management part of it immensely, I have also played a few mods but vanilla is my favorite. Anyway...

I am playing a VH/VH campaign as the brutii and about 100 turns in I sit at around 9 million currency. Now the problem is I always try to have a general in each settlement (so they can have kids, manage the settlement and more importantly be able to raise an army faster at the sight of threats) and they always, ALWAYS end up with absolutely horrible traits. I can for instance take a general out at age 16, harden him vs some very tough enemies and return him to a city with maxed out command & influence and after a couple of years I will be lucky if he still has one star left..

I know that having a lot of money means lazy and fat generals but is there no way I can build up a financial empire while keeping my generals as worthy roman men?

You could mod the files to raise the amount of money required to get bad traits, but I'd ask in the modding workshop for info on that.

This sounds like a VERY good solution, after 15 minutes of googling and searching this forum I came up with no answer, anyone?

Just spend all your money. Set taxes to normal or low. Then build a bunch of military building. Then build a bunch of high upkeep troops.
Wait a few turns and you'll be poor.

Well if the generals aren't in battle anyways let them have bad traits and don't stress. The generals out in the field will keep the good traits. Besides, if you're rich, your other FM don't need good traits, not like they're costing you valuable money.

I am a bit of a perfectionist, the things I do to maximize efficiency in RTW (right now as the brutii I have 15 cities queuing urban cohorts, 15 cities praetorian cav, 6 cities archers, then a fleet of transport for each city and another fleet for protecting the transport, this lets me field an elite army in a couple of turns. VERY fun when you play a minimal military approach up to the civil war and just hoard gold, you can pump out stack after stack of elite armies, the scipii sure got a surprise when I landed 8 stacks in jerusalem haha ) so I do want my generals to be at their best without having to sacrifice too much in other aspects of the game (the management of empires is the most fun part for me).

Then you must understand as an Emperor of RTW that no one is perfect. It's a game built. It can throw in random traits, or you can influence them. Just like people, they are influenced.

If you haven't already done so, you should build academies and their upgrades in your settlements. Also, letting a town riot (but not revolt) every so often can give you good traits. Other than that, war is a much better and faster way to get good traits than sitting in settlements hoping to get lucky.

You said you try to have a general/governor in each city? I thought that was impossosible, since the number of FMs generated is related to the number of settlements you own in a way that you'll never get as many FM as you have cities. Isn't it?

I think most of the time I have a governor in each city except some obscure border town I care little about (used as buffer and protected by an army in the field), I have had generals with multiple kids. It is also possible to bribe enemy generals (lol I had an egyptian faction leader once by accident, I had bribed him 20 turns earlier) if your coffers are big, including rebel generals (whom I actively hunt for with my diplomats for this exact purpose).
