    Default A question about difficulty.

this is my first campaign in tatw (i played like 10 min of 2.3, but just decided to wait for the settlements of 3.0) I have played a lot of both m2tw, and SS on very hard campaigns, and in both of those I steamrolled on this difficulty. now i am 20 turns into an isengard very hard campaign and, after capturing 2 rebel towns, rohan has 2 full stacks just sitting on my territory and more on the way. I barely have enough resources to hold my cities, let alone expand. Am i doing something very wrong or is this mod just a lot more difficult than SS?

Some factions are harder than others. For example, Gondor and Rohan are really tough. I usually play them on M/M (yeah, I know, I'm a TATW wuss). Other factions like the Sylvan Elves and Dale are easier, and I usually play them H/M (campaign/battle). In 2.1 I could play Eriador on VH/M. I haven't tried it in 3.1 yet.

Usually, when i am starting a campaign with a faction I have not played before I'll start out at H/M.

See what others are saying about the difficulty of other factions, and you should get a sense of what levels you'll find the most enjoyable.

The difficulty settings help reflect what you want. Battle difficulty helps enhance how battles against AI goes. Whereas the campaign gives the AI bonuses the more difficult you set it. If you're really good at battles but not quite so good on maneuvering on the campaign, go M/VH(campaign,battle) or vice versa.

    Hope that helps! Good Luck!

I play on VH/VH, and just decided to start over Isengard again, strategic errors on my part drove me back to Isengard where I am weathering the Rohirrim storm quite well but am unable to expand.I find getting beaten back by the computer refreshing when it comes to Med2. Certain versions of SS are extremely difficult as well.

I for instance did not build correctly at Duneard and ended up unable to hold it, nor could I take it back and hold it. Oh well live and learn. This version is tougher, but funner too I think.

Depending on faction I play h/vh or vh/vh.
Under the patronage of Finlander. Once patron to someone, no longer.
    Content's well good, innit.

I play all my campaigns in any TW gamr on H/H, it can still provide a challenge, but without that completely suicidal AI that I've come to hate so much...

So far, I've found 3.1 to be easier for some reason, but havn't tried Isengard yet

thx for the tips, just restarted as isengard on h/m, i was on vh/m
i always keep battles at medium in total war, not because i'm bad at them... anyone should be able to outsmart ai (even well modded ai) i just don't want ai to have bonuses on the battle map that i don't.
h/m is very manageable so far.

I was just wondering what was the people's overall feeling about difficulty in TATW when I searched fpr threads like this one.

I always played VH/ VH in Total War series and found no troubles whatsoever to crush the AI, but this is serious challenge! I am playing Gondor, turn 30 and I am starting to be pushed back by Harad and Mordor alternatively. I can't cover both sides and whenever I apply a more aggressive stance, full stacks come from nowhere. Difficult to overcome, but loving the experience!

So far I've only played on VH/VH, with the dwarves(twice) silvan elves, high elves and rohan. And yes it is a challenge, but I don't think it gets that hard that you cannot beat it, and I like a challenge. Never had to give up a game either, had some setbacks, of course, when rhun shows up with 6 full stacks of good armies, though I feel some may, like a friend of mine also playing this, cannot allow himself to lose a settlement, (if he has taken one he must hold it no matter what). Which is a bit silly.

But as pyrgopolynices said, I've done so with all the total war series games, I especially liked the challenge of playing prussia on very hard in empire ^^ multifront wars, having to scrape a living, take all the oportunities you get... It helps you being able to handle these situations - such as many occur in this mod! Though I can't say I see any issue in perhaps setting it to H/H so it's a bit more relaxed, but lower than hard? meh, I need difficulty to strive!

Well...long ago I rocked into Mordor (leaving Boromir shocked) with High Elves, but 'twas kind of a cheat. I conquered towns by sieging them with spies infiltrated, who opened the gates, thus not triggering the "garrison script", so towns were way too easy to conquer.

I play my campaings on VH/VH but I deleted the "barracks script" so I have acess to top tier units which, when well placed, makes a huge difference. But I also edited the export_descr_buildings so lets say; I have acess to Eldars but made their replenish time longer, and so on. You know, find a way which makes sense to you and don't bother your conscience.

And finally, HE are the easiest faction to play. With Gondor I can barely hold Minas Morgul.

I usually do H/M. Sometimes if I just want to relax Ill do a M/M campaign (for difficult factions).
