    Default Update on BNP?

I'm just curious, how many % of the votes (in surveys etc) does this British party have?

is there any chance at all of this party winning next election?

They won, what, 13 seats, on top of their 5-10 already won seats, in the local elections? Out of a few hundred. So, its quite a lot of votes.

I always get the image that they are a small party that makes a lot of noise...so am I wrong about that? are they really a party on the rise?

the BNP hold 44 seats on various local councils, but hold no parliamentary seats at all. they aren't likely to win any either

they won 11 seats on one council alone - Barking and Dagenham, in London, making it the 2nd biggest party on the council

<1% nationally. Not quite the 40% that our papers went into a frenzy about.

They only get seats in places of high racial tension. There are relatively few of these hotspots and thus relatively few BNP seats. Usual extremist group tactics of distorting the truth, playing on peoples fears and exploiting situations.

that's what I was talking about. I heard it on the news and I got a little confused...40% seems a little much.

Ha not quite it never went away.

Bwaho I think has seen a news story saying 40% result in a local election or some such.

In the local elections on 4th May 2006 the BNP more than doubled its number of councillors, increasing the number from 20 to 52. [35] The biggest gain was in Barking and Dagenham where the BNP won 11 of the 13 seats it contested. The BNP also won 3 seats in Epping Forest, 3 in Stoke on Trent, 3 in Sandwell, 2 seats in Burnley, 2 in Kirklees, and single seats in Birmingham, Bradford, Havering, Solihull, Redditch, Redbridge, Pendle and Leeds. The Solihull seat was in the Chelmsley Wood ward and was won by a majority of just 19 votes. Their Birmingham seat of Kingstanding is the subject of an electoral petition from the Labour Party, backed by Birmingham City Council, whose Returning Officer has said the BNP candidate's election was the result of a counting error.
those don't all seem like areas of high racial tension to me....

Hmm quickly typed by me but I didn't feel like regurgitating the UCL report I read a fortnight ago.

The most comprehensive report into what is fuelling the BNP's success points towards the most obvious areas that increase a far right parties votes. A lack of education, racial tension, predominantly white areas of semiskilled or skilled workers where multiculturalism or immigration is a high concern and wake up call votes to Labour.

Nothing we did not know already.
