    Default Damn, WRE is hard.

I juist started a WRE campaign and it seems that I got my hands full. Money in the red, Hordes at the gates of Rome and in Iberia, rebelions everywhere and not to mention the whole religion issue.

Anybody got some sound strategies to share?

I already sold everything in provinces that are likely to rebel, but some I just refuse to give up, such as the rebelious one in Italy, but money is definately an important issue here.I just barely crosed into the black after disbanding almost my entire navy and taking the big battle with the visigoths in Italy, costing me about about 1200 men, which reduced my upkeep somewhat.

I've played WRE onoe time in vanilla. Had to exterminate the population every once in a while to get some cash (The income was going down..). And it was hard indeed.

sorry, I won't share any strategies with you, as I know too much of the code to be fair  . However, let me say that with all the hordes coming at u, it is meant to be difficult to play as WRE (historically they would be gone in a few decades from the start of the game, because of more or less the same reasons that you pointed out minus religion [w/c I hope to fix by next vers]), which is the exact opposite of vanilla btw, wherein WRE survives and ERE gets eaten up by the hordes ...

Ok, I fell that I have somewhat stabilized the situation. Althóugh the Franks are also a real threat in north eastern Gaul.

I have retaken the city below carthage and exterminated it. Revenge for rebeling!! Gave me good cash, which were severly needed to rebuild the economi. I have a somewhat strong field army in North Africa to deal with WRER in that region.

Do I need to get ready for the huns in this region?

I only spend money on armies when it realy important. I regret somewhat, that I lost that many men in my Italian legion to defeat the visigoths, the legionaries are badly missed. I think I should retrain them in Rome as soon as I can spare the money.

New Carthage is proberly gonna fall to the huns, although I have a strong garrison. That was a mistake, should have given it up and evacuated the troopps.

Money situation is now far better, as I have invested all that I can in ports and traders.
Is the bigger ports worth the money at this time? I mean they cost a lot more than just the basic ports.

sounds more like you're having a lot of fun
anyway, I hope the Huns don't reach Africa, not sure about the Vandals, though...
and the ports are more expensive but bring in more trade, so thats your call

Damn, these limitai units sucks. I can´t even defeat the Franks, they just tear me up. Loving it.

But economi is on it´s way into a steady surplus each turn. The hard part is to know when to turn from investing in growth to the legions. Thinks it is about time now, The Franks will storm my city next turn, maybe then the limitai will perform decent when on the defence. The rest of my initial legion, sligthly strengtened, is on it way to defend northern Gaul.

Archers rocks, the Franks have no heart for fire arrows. And, I have plenty of ém. Come get some.

Oh NOOOOOOoooo...Just as I was getting the hang of the Gaul situation and reduced the vandals at the walls of new Carthago, my allies, the ERE attacked me with 4 full stacks. Damn it!!! Gues I know where my newly raised, still understrength legion from Italy is going.

Sholuld I invade Greece or go for a defence of Illyria, I mean the Huns are near.

First off, please dont double post. As for your former allies, just go defend Illyria. The ERE doesint usually stay at war with you once the hordes arrive, infact in some of my games they'll ask for a ceasfire and trade rights. But if the Huns dont come toward that provence just let Illyria rebel to WRER, the ERE wont border you anymore and thus, wont want to be at war with you anymore. Thats how I took care of that problem.

1 method I did with WRE was fall back to North Africa and secured it. I basically burnt and tore down every city that I knew I couldn't defend and poured money into building up North Africa and the islands. Southern Italy was mostly left alone by the hordes so I turned it into my staging area.

Water is your friend. The Berbers are easy to deal with once you cripple and destroy them. That and the hordes usually leave you alone though one time a fleet of Celts invaded one of my islands.......

Once everything was ready I began an invasion of SPain and Italy and went from there.
