Default Question about CPU and Mobo

Ok first of i tried to do search but it keeps crapping out so i'm posting as i need answers as soon as possible.

I'm in the market for a new CPU and Mobo. I mainly use my comp for Rome:TW and M2:TW when it comes out.

I know RTW doesn't really utilize the hyper-threading CPUs as much as other games. Right now i got a P4 3.0 GHZ w/hyper-threading and i can really only play a battle with around 6 or 7 thousand men on the screen with no problem. anything higher than that is unplayable. I don't know if M2TW will be very heavy on the CPU or not but i don't want to take any chances.

My question really is if there is a card out there now that will enable me to play battles with over 15,000 men on the screen or should i wait closer to when M2:TW comes out hoping there is a better card out there?

Well what graphics card do you have? I can play RTW smoothly with my old X600 up to 15000 men or more. RTW is very cpu dependent, if you want better performance I suggest you do some tweaking. (shut down unused applications/services...etc) Also how much ram do you have?

Honestly I think you would be hard pressed to find a box that could handle 15,000 units simultaneously - especially with the additional calculations that M:TW2 is going to add. My box (7900gtx, 2gig ddr400, athlon 3700+) couldn't handle 15,000 and I can run Oblivion 12x10 full HDR and max settings..

Who? I'd like to see some proof here.. because I simply do not beleive it. I have a high end box and it can't run 15,000.

    Maybe on LOW res...

I have seen videos from people on here who have played 30,000 men battles.

I am surprised that you have such bad gameplay with specs like that. Not that they are top of the line, but they are definitley decent enough!

My CPU is old. I don't know if thats causing the performance issues at all but it is about 4 years old.

So noone knows what the best current CPU for RTW would be?

Those battles are from people with highly overclocked CPUs, they are overclocked to speeds beyond what the manufactures are selling. If you really want 15000+ battles to run smoothly you could try to overclock your cpu, but if you are not careful you might ruin your cpu.

For example, the person that posted pictures of 30000+ battles is Pent Up Rage. He can run it because his cpu is overclocked at 4.3 ghz.

    AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 939pin or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800 DUAL CORE
The Athlon FX-60 is Dual-core, as is the 4800. The only difference is the 4800 is 2.4 ghz while the FX-60 is 2.6 Ghz. Currently, the FX-60 is the king of the Market, with the FX-57 (Single core, but 2.8 ghz) tied with it. They are both overkill, imho. I think this is ironic though, as I have a 4800.

Well what graphics card do you have? I can play RTW smoothly with my old X600 up to 15000 men or more.
WE are very similar. My computer is still at the shop getting Windows on it (Also, I dont have a car, so ). Right now i've been playing games on a dell in the house. It has 1GB RAM, a 256 X600 and Dual Core 2.8 ghz Intel in it. I can play 8,000 + man battles on RTW with Europa Barbarorum with little to no lag.

Funkb, if your thinking about getting an FX-60, (I'm so jealous) then you ought to just build a whole new computer around it! Your computer is a symphony, not random instruments....

I can run 15,000+ battles in RTW, no problem. The only lag (and I mean almost imperceptible) is in the first 30-45 seconds, and then, smooth as silk!(unless there is a bridge involved!) I have an Asus A8N-SLI Premium mainboard,an Athlon 64 4000+,3GB of OCZ DDR400 Platinum (I know, everybody gives me ***t about having too much RAM), 2 XFX 7900GTXs and an OCZ Powerstream 600W PSU.I play on 1280x1024 resolution with all settings maxed except AA(x2) and grass(med.)

MW2 is gonna be a totally different animal than RTW! If you want to run that game "smoothly and efficiently" you better go with nothing less than an Athlon X2 4200+ or Pentium 4 560, and do an SLI or a Crossfire mainboard. JMO. Honestly,I think my system above is gonna be able to hang with MW2 though....

BTW, my first VC was an Abit Radeon X600 ProGuru. That was a killer little GPU...

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

    Hadrian,

I have come to that decision of just building a a whole new PC. What do you think of this setup?

    Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe SC939 nVIDIA nForce4 SLIx16 Chipset DDR400
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800 DUAL CORE
Dual eVGA 512 MB each GeForce 7900GTX
    3 GB PC3200 DDR400 Samsung
    2 x WD 250 GB 7200 RPM 8MB SATA-II
Thermalake 680 W PSU SLI ready

I'm thinking i may need to up the HDD as there is 10k RPM and 16 MB cache.

You think its worth it to get this now or wait until around MT2 comes out to see if they make something newer?

sometimes when i go on site to companies that have a contract with us their servers have half the power than what you are going to buy for games

i also think im underpayed because i cant even consider buying like that. not that i wouldnt buy the same if i won the lottery

Overkill. Just one 7900GT will do for video card, and for processor, the best bang for the buck is the X2 4200 or the X2 4400. And you DON'T need 3 gigs of ram!!! (Look at what you have done Hadrian!! ) 2 gigs is more than enough.

A 7900GT is more than enough to handle M2 TW. It can also play ALL the games out right now on max settings at 1600x1200.
