This is a question I always wanted to ask. In each and every performance tip they advice you to defrag, but I never experienced any difference and it takes so much time .

Its a small difference really, its more for peace of mind knowing your hard drive is operating as efficiently as possible.

In theory it reorganises the physical locations of files so that they appear in a more logical order, which means they in theory can be accessed faster which translates to quicker load times. In practical terms youll notice not much difference, though your hard drive may be less prone to failure or corruption if its nicely defragmented. It just keeps things running smoothly

actually it doesnt' give you a dramatic increase , its not magic you know, but it does give you a Noticeable increase, that is you can notice the diffrence after defragmentation.

It depends on how often you do it. Obviously, if after 2 years this is your first time, you will notice a difference, simply because files will be organised a lot more efficiently than they were before. But if you are regular (once a month) about it, you won't notice a huge difference. It can also free up space for you, by clearing spaces. You should really do a thorough cleaning and scaning purge once a month to keep your system healthy. This includes spyware, virus scans, purging temp files with a proper program (ccleaner will do) and reg scanners, and remove everything unnecessary.
This is the best way to keep your PC going at its best.

Edit: this is an EXCELLENT guide for just regular maintenence I suggest you read through at least once, written by fatsheep: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=45815

ya i work at a computer store and i noticed on a pc that is slow that it was fragmented.
well the main reasons for it beeing slow was viruses and spyware which i removed of course. it was not a busy day and i just started the defrag..i thought it doesnt hurt. my manager acually went there and turned it off commenting on it " it doesnt do anything to improve the speed)
so i guess its not really important anymore. if you have a fat32 filesystem it is more important

Well, if you copy/paste lots of big 1 gig+ files, it can save you some time
