OSLO (Reuters) - The Barents Sea island of Nymark wants to break away from the King of Norway and be a republic. Or so says Alex Hartley.

The English artist is the self-proclaimed discoverer and ruler of Nymark, an uninhabited island the size of a football pitch. Nymark emerged in recent years as a glacier warmed and retreated from the sea.

"About two weeks ago I wrote to the Norwegian Prime Minister, the Norwegian Foreign Office and the governor of Svalbard saying I wanted to secede," Hartley, 42, told Reuters by telephone from London.

"I have also written to the
United Nations for official recognition as an independent nation."

hmm... an interesting claim... legally speaking

when Sealand was claimed it was outside british territorial waters... whereas these islands are part of norway's territory... plus... if the sea levels fell and say, an island was discovered off the south coast england, not far from the Isle of Wight, i'm sure it would belong to the crown, since the crown owns all land above and below the sea inside english territory... if Norway uses the same land law system, they can legally evict they guy... if they use the more european Dominion system based on roman law... harder to say

Apparently their ownership of arctic islands depends on them being known at the signing of the treaty on 1920.
so his claim might be legit

however, this guy has only only claimed the island since 2004... but the norwegian polar institute claims they've known about ity since 1998... which means their claim, on behalf of the norwegian government, would be stronger...

as far as i understand the treaty (not having read it) it states that all islands with a certain area belong to norway...
not, all islands within a certain area at 12.00 on 01/01/1920...
if the island is in norwegian territorial waters, it would be hard to found a legitimate claim

That's pretty much what I was thinking. So what's he going to do when (if) this island is his then? Try to get immigrants from Norway to come? How big is this island anyway?

it is as big as an football field. still it would be cool to have your own nation. first thing id do is to ask china for credit to boost the economy on my island haha

he could also build a little arena, give asylum to criminals and let them fight in the arena

The island was not named and apparently not even mapped properly, so Norway failed to place a claim over the island.

The treaty doesnt have a reference to territorial waters.

The fella was just on Radio 2 Steve Wrights show. He is claiming the Island as "an artistic representation of displaying the effects of Global warming." or words there of.
He also is surprised that his claim had the legs to carry it thus far.
