    Default Positive and negative discrimination.

I am currently taking a class dicussing American history and at times politics/policy

One topic this one white guy who I'm good friends with brought up the topic of standup comedy, but just comedy in general. He was complaning about how protections for minorities have gone so far that the first derogatory thing anyone says, in perticular a white guy would be belittled by society and the school in an instant. He was mad about the fact that its ok for say Black or Hispanic comedians to make fun of white people left and right when everyone thinks its funny, but once again the minute a white guy makes a black joke, the whole world is against him.

In my personal opinion I can understand that the minorities (which I am a part of) can be upset when they've been putting up with a lot of racism and descrimination out in public and in the workforce hear only worse things on TV and Radio, but then again I also understand my friend's position. He always says "Well I thought you guys wanted to be equal! Stop being a hypocrite!"

    Thoughts?

I agree that it is a problem. However, I think it, like many problems, is caused by a tiny, very vocal minority of these minorities. I have a black friend, some Indian friends, a Korean and a Chinaman. Hell, they let me take the mick out of their race. The Nigerian is three times the size of God, the Indians are curry mad, the Korean wants North Korea to invade so he can go home and kick their arses and the Chinaman is a tiny man. I tell them all these and of course they don't care, it's funny, and they're rational people.

The problem comes from people with bigger mouths than brains, of all races.

People of all races can make fun of whites because "us whites" are self secure enough to take it.
Maybe one day others wil get as self-secure as we are, but untill then we just have to be carefull not to hurt their feelings.

Don't be in denial of evidential support that I will soon provide, Erik. Whites aren't the only ones who can take a little discrimination, look at history and tell me that

Must have missed your election of spokesman for white people because I wasnt able to cast my vote as someone else said your making a generalization. Some white people are and certainly entitled to be offended to jokes made about them. From my pov I wouldnt call anyone friend regardless of color who cant take a joke and laugh at themselves so to me anyone who gets offended by humor, black, hispanic, white, asian etc are too uptight if its good natured fun.

Probably because whites don't have a history of being discriminated against.

You mean that whites don't have a history of being unempowered minorities, and haven't exactly been on the receiving end of history. Have there been all sorts of historical prejudices against whites? Yes. Have whites been underestimated? Yes.

Have there been overwhelmingly more discriminating white powers, invading and colonising other non-white powers, and discriminating them? Yes.

It just depends on the person. I have a black friend at work who I make racial jokes all the time. Its all in good fun. Some blacks at my work are offended by us joking but its just in good fun. Everyone just needs to laugh if off, don't let it bother them.

I'm not really going to bother with the rest.

Now to the quote, which people wanted equality? Blacks? This is the second time I have heard this retarded quote from someone, so it's true that all blacks are alike, genius! By his know-it-all assumption, I guess all americans are robots that want to kill all muslims, communists and everyone who doesnt agree with them, while at the same time also want to bring world peace and happiness to everyone, I guess he forgot what DIVERSITY IS..

News flash for your friend, it was Martin Luther King who pushed for equality, not the black "race", he has followers who agreed with him, but it's not like it was the national duty of all black people to want equality, the above statement is either pure stupidity, or a foolish claim of MLK being some type of god and Black people having some type of chip installed in them that told them to follow his example, it is MLK who called for equality, not the entire black "race".

Yes I'm so sure there was many blacks in America at the time of MLK that didn't support him. They enjoyed racism!

Oh and in the area I live in, you can more or less say anything racist your want. In jest or otherwise. Of course if you went up to someone and was racist to him, that doesn't mean he wouldn't be mad. Just not anymore made them insulting him any other way. Though I have noticed on the tv etc that no one insults minorities, and insult whites quite often. Its annoying. Not because of double standards really, but because it seems thats the only jokes a minority comedian can make. Not always of course, but 90% of them follow the same routine, it gets repetitive.

I call my italian friend a lost sand ngger with a greasy ass he calls me a praire ngger and has his children do war cries when I come in. My boss calls me
chief two beers (commenting on indians inability to handle alcohol). Its all in good fun if its done with humor.

    Don't say white, say "majority".

If they feel insensitive about their skin color I'm happy to make concessions. Talking of which, people make fun of Asians all the time, and yet we don't really get all that mad or upset.

Reverse discrimination is tolerance, blacks discriminating against whites is still discrimination.

Thats just not true. I've seen plenty of white guys cracking chicken and sambo jokes to know better. If the whole world is against him, then chances are the joke just wasn't funny more than anything else.

    I got a joke:
So a spic and a ****** walk into a fag bar.
    ...
I don't really have a punchline for that one.

If his joke was anything like mine, it's no wonder he isn't seen as a good comedian.

Great points alll of you! Thanks for discussing!

Anyways, back on topic though.. I do believe my friend sees this whole issue in terms of black and white, but personally I believe that yes minorities should have laws that protect them from descrimination in the workforce and in schools... things that I personally see as essential. But it is really society that I believe makes black, mexican, [insert any ethnic minority]..ect a taboo subject, and these laws aren't to blame

The most ridiculous part of this argument is the name of the thread. "Reverse discrimination." Does it matter who discriminates who? Either way it's discrimination. There is no reverse.
