Victory against hugely outnumbering enemy, decimation of equal or larger enemy.. there are many ways, but those are the two main ones I think.
The two that Shyam Popat mentions are the only two I know of. (I only play on Hard or VH; so it might be different on other settings.) You need an excellent performance (high kill ratio) if you are only slightly outnumbered; or reasonable kill ratio when heavily outnumbered. Note that you do not have to be outgunned, just outnumbered: You can get a heroic victory with 54 gold sword, gold shield, silver chevron, Legionary Cav against 240 un-upgraded Peasants.Originally Posted by Shyam Popat
I have never (to the best of my knowledge) gotten a heroic victory when I outnumbered the enemy, even if I only outnumbered them slightly and won against higher quality troops that "outgunned" mine. In the latter case, you may hear the "this is a HEROIC victory!" But the screen will show that it is only a CLEAR victory.

Even if you greatly outnumber the enemy, you can still get a heroic victory by completely destroying the opposing army without loosing a single man. I remember several times I was chasing either the enemy King or a small band of warriors, who only had a 100 -300 men with them, and when they were finally cornered, I killed every single last man by archers and the game gave me a heroic victory even though I completely outnumbered them.
usually when you overwhelm your enemy and only suffer only a few loses
yes, you must also make sure none of them escapeOriginally Posted by Trajan

I see your post, too, Severous. Good idea on taking notes. But I am up to about 350 battles on my current campaign. That would be a lot of note taking!Originally Posted by Trajan
Heh, heh, heh; guess it just never happened that I won a Heroic when I outnumbered the enemy; I believe you, though. But, Severous, I am pretty sure that I have gotten a Heroic when the slider was in my favor. Maybe Trajan's post explains why. I will tuck this away and pay closer attention to the slider as well as the pre-battle summary screen.
*scowls* Herioc Victory's are few and far between. Interesting note tho. When I play as any of the Roman factions, each Heroic victory gives me a triumphal arch in a city (I think all of them...not completly sure tho). Has anybody else noticed this?
Ive recorded all the battles in my last two campaigns.
Heroic occur then the battle odds are against you. The little blue/red slider bar on the initial battle screen has to be in favour of the enemy. Even if 1:1 odds if the slider is in the enemy favour you can get a heroic.
You have to win the battle.
If its a big enough battle Heroic victories can also become the site of 'historic battle' and earn the sword icon on the map.
Ive had several heroics when I out number the enemy but have lower quality troops.

When defending a city, it's a disgrace if I don't get Heroic victory, well atleast if I have Phalanx units. Stupid AI just runs it's guys to my spears blocking the streets and usually gets most of it's army killed, then I send out cavalry unit(s) to mob the routers. Voila, 10-20 guys killed from my army (large unit scale) and same amount of survivors on other side (those who managed to rout of the map) and Heroic victory. It's been working like a charm in my current campaing (Seleucid Empire) against Egypt, Pontus (RIP), Parthia (RIP) and Armenia (RIP).
Defending the cities is ridiculously easy. All you really need is 4 phalanx units (levy pikemen can do the job, even militia hoplite) placed to block the streets to town square.
It is right to learn, even from the enemy.

it happens to me also when battles last very very long, after many dead on both sides, very tigh battles that you really dont know who will end up winner because every second the advantage is goin to one you then to ennemi and in the end only a very few troops alive...
This is the kindda battle, i think, everybody would like to play more more often
Heroic victorys as far as i know come when your outnumbered by loads and/or the enemy has better equipment.
Twice in my current campaign I have wiped out all the enemy without taking any casualties. Both were 'clear victories'. Both times I was outnumbered. Both times the odds were in my favour as I had superior troops.
