Default New MTW2 Preview in PC Gamer

The new PC Gamer arrived prompty at my doorstep this morning, coming with a new MTW2 preview. Here is some new info -

-Some units can pit down rows of stakes to protect from cavalry.
-BATTLES ARE SLOWED DOWN, units moral does not collapse so quickly
-There is now impassable terrain(im sure that was in RTW)
-To get Guilds in your cities, you have have to work for it(not sure what though)

It also says that a top level castle can churn out 4 units at once, this could be interesting. And Military orders(like knights Templar) will be treated as guilds.

And there is also another pic, it has pretty much every catholic nation nation waging a huge battle, its actually pretty nice.

In contrast to the efforts of tiny Israel to make contributions to the world so as to better mankind, one has to ask what have those who have strived to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth done other than to create hate and bloodshed.

No, really? Who'd have thought it!

The news about the four units at once is interesting, but otherwise it's just all what we've heard before. I wonder if this will become a trend - CA just repeats all the details they've previously released and adds on one new revelation. That could spin the publicity out much llonger.

I presume they mean it will be triggered by an event. E.g. a successful crusade may give you the option of building a Templar Guild. Winning a major battle, generating x amount in trade, assainating a high ranking general etc

I guess the Guilds will just extend your natural playing style, by rewarding you for what you do well already.

Being able to generate more troops with higher grade castles sounds like a good option too.

Not sure if I like the 4 units at once as I think it means that the game can become less strategic and more of a clickfest. Imagine you see an unexpected large enemy army that will reach your capital in two turns. Because of a strategic decision the garrison only has a unit of peasants guarding your most valuable city. This could prove a real problem in the previous titles where you would be forced to reinforce your garrison from nearby cities/armies etc if at all possible. With the new system you could just turn out 2x4 units of Longbowmen to avert the situation and make your castle impregnable. This is not a step forward imo. That said I do sometimes enjoy the excellent mod SPQR when I want to mass large armies and battles quickly where mass recruitment was possible. All the time though? Not a chance.

    PLEASE MAKE THIS OPTIONAL CA!

I hope the AI will be getting better. Otherwise a human player will always swift produce a lot of units and the AI won't stand a chance.

Well we all have to accept it. AI will never be as good as a human player in terms of creative and strategic play.

That doesn't mean that can't *try* to design the game in such a way that they also ar emindful of how this will affect the gameplay expereince (vis a vis the AI). A good game designer keeps this in mind. A poor one...

I wonder if a better way of engineering the production in castles would be through the use of "Production Points". I'll explain this in greater deal.

Each unit has a "production value" - how long it takes to build. Lets say we have "Elite Mega Swordsmen - 4 points" and "Peasant Spearmen of Unbelievable Stench - 1 point).

The castle has 4 "Production points"

It can spend all its production points raising a unit of swordsmen, or it can spend a point on quickly equipping its peasant force with basic spears and armour. Thus representing the effect of quickly raising a militia when needed, or creating an elite force during peace time.

I doubt we'll see this, but I guess it would be nice.

That would be kind of like what was in the Civ games, maybe it could be mad in a mod? if not then it really dosn't matter...

Well, that should not be too hard for them to do... and that really does sound appealing. If they used that idea, i would forsure not complain.

Actually, since only a top level castle can build 4 units at once. I don't see the problem... If you have a massive castle, it would surely be able to spam some sort of troops out for you...

And yeah, it would probably be like what stalins ghost said, with production points...

eh, i think we will see something similar to this, because a fully upgraded castle churning out 4 elite units a turn sounds a little too much.

Finally. This is the main big reason I stopped playing rtw and now only play medieval. The fast boom, bash, smash, eye candy battles in rtw really took away from the strategic aspect. Also having a small amount of cavalry taking out piles of infantry.

M2TW battles will go something like this:

Boom, bash, smash, eye candy....eye candy...eye candy...

I guess you were never playing as a Gaul vh/vh and fighting Egyptians... I can tell you that my best cavalry was shredded even when it charged into the back of their phalanx!
