How do you feel about caning?

Do you think it should be brought back as a form of punishment? It seems to work in Singapore. If you think about it, it costs so much less than sending somebody to jail. Canings also take up much less time for everyone involved. Instead of sitting in a jail cell, the crook just gets a few solid whacks and then he can go about his day.

The most well-publicized case was the Michael Fay incident. It was a fairly simple story: American idiot steals street signs and vandalizes property in Singapore, idiot is sentenced to be caned, American government shrieks and whines that idiot is getting what's coming to him, idiot gets caned anyways because he broke the law in Singapore. What's ironic is that after the media hubbub quieted down, most Americans actually were in favor of Fay getting caned. In fact, some American politicians proposed caning as a form of punishment.

So let's hear it. What do you think about caning, and should it be brought back to the US and Europe?

I'm against caning simply because I think it's not the best way to raise kids.
Kids need to learn responsibilities, not to fear their own parents and teachers.

Somewhat.
The episode is about correcting Cartmans behaviour.
They try several techniques, not actual caning, but they did pinch him a lot.

Caning is too brutal for children, and it also tends to instill some with perverse fetishes later on in life. However, for badly behaving teenagers (ASBO type) and minor felonies, I think it could be a good alternative punishment.

It can be effective, albeit a bit brutal. I think instead of caning children, though, it should be used as part of the punishment system for felons.

It should be brought back into schools, a very stern talking to a child does nothing. They will continue to misbehave and no amount of detentions or suspensions can deter that.

On the one hand, fair enough. Teachers simply don't have enough authority to teach any more in many places. Bring back flogging and making children decline latin verbs in a dreary chant!

On the other hand it would be abused like hell. I never got on with half of my teachers, and would probably have been flogged to within an inch of my life by now. So to sum up my opinion, bring it back as a punishment, but one which can only be enforced if it has the agreement of the principle/headmaster/revolutionary-comittee.

In the wider world? No thanks. I've been on the wrong side of the law (for minor offenses) a couple of times, and having your name and adress taken down is bad enough in the majority of cases. For the ASBO generation? Why, deport them to Australia of course! *twirls mustache*

So institutionalize abusing power, and get "good" behaviour out of it? I'm sorry, but I'm failing to see how violent abuse will lead to better people. All that will result from it would be more people dropping out of school and Britain reverting back to the twisted class system of the Victorian period. (Not that I'm complaining of course - I could wear a top hat and say "What Ho! Octavian!" whenever I felt like it.)

You evidentally claim with "to enforce good behaviour in this generation with what little time we have." that without good behavior that generation will be wasted - however history tells a different story. What of the London mobs who sacked the Houses of Parliament? What of the Mods and Rockers? What seems to happen is that they either fall out of the system all together or mature and rejoin society as a whole. Lack of respect doesn't lead to lack of society.
