    Default What's so great about Arnor?

    I've been working to try and get Arnor brought back and was getting bored playing defensive, so I decided to check the "palantir guide" showing unit stats for third age. It doesn't look like the Arnor units are that great compared to other civilizations. In fact, looks like they're lower.

    So what's the benefit of Arnor? Why go through the long rush up, the expensive hall of kings, the financial and culture crash, etc. - for a civ that isn't any better than one you could have started the game with in the first place?

    Thanks for any input on what I might be missing here.

    yeah i find nothing really good with them the only thing i like about them is how there look

    Arnor has more variety of units, compared to Eriador. More cavalry, more swordsmen.Makes fighting the orcs ALOT easier

    there like gondor but with a little more diversity and actual have fairly good units.. the difference is, is that your taking a pure millita faction and turning it into a faction like gondor. Also if you dont like eridors lack of heavy units it also helps

    Their archers are the thing.

    Hollow Steel Marksmen... you'd just get a glimpse of that.

    That's in Baron's submod, not vanilla 3.1. Last time I played with them they were horribly overpowered.

    The Arnor Pikemen are pretty good, they have a spear wall. The Spear Militia of Arnor can form a shield wall, which also has tactical use. The Marksmen have better armour and damage than Breeland Archers. The best units of Arnor are Knights of Annúminas and Dúnedain Knights, they are really immensely strong. They have a replenishment time of 11 turns, but in my experience that's not that bad. I usually have 4-6 units of them in my armies, they don't die quickly. Plus if you get quests with rewards of "some of the best available units you can recruit", it will be them. The Arnor Knights are very strong heavy cavalry, and the Arnor Sergeants are quite capable medium cavalry. In general, Arnor's units have higher morale and stamina than Eriador's units.

    And then there are RP purposes... It feels like you're playing as Númenorë.

    This submod can give you the option to start as arnor, which is pretty neat, and just dont activate any of the other scripts if you wanna keep it closer to vanilla

    Because by the time you reunited the kingdom there are very few remaining foes, the campaing come to an end and I don't enjoy enought playing with them.

    You also should not compare a human faction to Elves or Dwarves as no human faction will win that

    From the game perspective its usually pretty late before Arnor emerges anyway, by the time it happens you would have crushed OOTM and OOTG and are only playing to help gondor with harad and mordor who are both very formidable at that point especially on vh/vh. Be nice to have a late game army that can actually compete, instead I find arnor armies are almost incapable of getting heroic victories because they lack units with killing power and at the same time they lack units that can take punishment. Their best unit is dunedain rangers... and thats a free peoples unit so if it rains you might aswell go home because your going to lose half a stack, or maybe lose your whole army depending on how much cav the ai has. I expect to be able to wipe at least 5 ai stacks for every one of mine but im getting maybe 2 to 1 if im lucky and really careful which sucks against an ai that pumps out troops for free. I sent 6 stacks with full star generals at harad and after i killed about 8 of their stacks i only have 2 left and harads forces are pretty much back to where they were before i came, now all i can do is try to defend the few settlements i managed to grab before i ran out of steam and my treasury dried up. If i had 6 stacks of any other army in the game id be in a brothel in Umbar already

    Nonsense! Knights of Annúminas are the strongest cavalry in the game, hollow steel marksmen the best human archers. Arnor has atrong infantry as well.

    From your experience I would say you planned your strategy wrong.

    Yeah I deliberately turtled until gondor was overrun so I could test my arnor armies out on the field against strong harad and mordor stacks I'm just saying the results are dissapointing. Knights of Anuminas are good but they can only be trained in annuminas and I'm fighting Harad and mordor now, they cost too much upkeep to move all the way down and eriador economy is weak because they dont have many port cities. I would say youv'e got some kind of mod on because I havent seen hollow steel marksmen and the infantry is terrible apart from the battle ready dunedain which is a free peoples unit. Already won the campaign as free peoples so they are good enough for their location, just not in the same league as other powerful factions and thats a bit of an anticlimax for me personally

    I always found it to be a pain just to get to arnor. I almost always have to negotiate with HE to get one of the southern territories required, can't remember name, maybe Argond/Tharbad? Anyhow, Eriador isn't that bad of a civ but I run into trouble trying to kill the trolls once orcs get them while I'm still Eriador.

    I think Tharbad is always conquered by Isengard initially. You probably let the HE take it? I played at least 5 Arnor campaigns, and it's not that hard to restore it. If it were easier it would take the fun out of it.

    yeah OoG usually have at least one mountain troll unit it their armies when i play as eriador and they just tear my breeland militia up when defending fought a battle on weathertop and it was me with 20% losses and them with 0% losses and at the end of the battle i lost every single soldier while killing 80% of their units all because trolls are big and burly

    Without Baron's mod that's true. With it's additional units they get some nice units which make them pretty much equal to Gondor.

    Also their starting position is probably the safest. Isengard is tied with Rohan and Dwarves and HE keep Orcs busy.
