Pete Doherty gets enough bad press from newspapers that for most people hi name is more synonymous with drugs than with his music. Sure, he is a junkie (this generations sid vicious, yet Dylan at the same time) and will be most certainly going to jail after the latest pictures released in the British media but i really hate it when in most conversations about him poeple just slag him, saying stuff like "why do you like him, hes a *******ing junkie etc..". There are tons of famous bands that are into drugs and all sorts of socially unacceptable things. Pete Doherty is the exception because he attracts so much media attention. Part of the bands following may be down to their image, but you can respect an artists work, even if you don't respec the way that the artist acts.

The truth is (in my opinion) that Babyshambles are the best British band around currently. Sure, bands like Arctic Monkeys may be more popular but their music is nothing in comparison to the depth, meaning and romace present in most of Doherty's lyrics. I think Babyshambles and the Libertines (the band Pete was thrown out of because of his drug problems, perhaps one of the most definitive British bands ever) will be remembered and reveared for a long time. I must say that when Pete left the Libertines i was doubtful that he would ever achieve something like the Libertines did, without his co-frontman Carl Barat, but in Babyshambles first album named "Down in Albion", Pete has achieved a record as good as either of the Libertines' albums.

I dont know how well the bands im talking about are know outside the UK, and even here many poeple are oblivious to their music. To those that know them and those that don't, i would like to hear your opinions. Here are some videos of my favourite tracks, please watch some:

 Forever (one of my favourite songs)

    Killimangiro

Pete's Website with some accoustic videos - i really like the 4th one (press the arrows)

    A Libertines Bio

    & an interview

Im never managed to see the Libertines live but i have seen Babyshambles and they were one of the best bands i have seen. Today i bought tickets for a gig in around two weeks, probably the last before Pete goes behind bars for a while.

Well, I would have to say that The Darkness are the greatest band of the 21st Century. Every single track that they have recorded is amazing (indeed, as they say, "Rock-based music of exceptional quality"). I must say that I do not have the time nor, perhaps, the eloquence to describe to you just how phenomenal they actually are. I think that it comes down to the pure enjoyment that they, and from them their fans, have with their music. Certainly a band that you either understand entirely or don't get at all. Not to mention the best live act I've ever seen.

I'm not familiar with the bands, you proposed, though (I'm from Australia by the way).

I like The Coral, it's like Jethro Tull made love to The Beatles and they are their lovechild.

Akercocke/My Dying Bride. Obviously just my opinion though as they're not the biggest of bands really.

Well...In my opinion the British music scene is rather dull at the moment (*gasp*). Or maybe not dull, but more just not to my tastes. We've seen a massive boom in New-Wave at the moment, and I really, really dont like new-wave. The way I see it the only good bands around that much at the moment are the (older) alt. rock bands who seem to have got their acts together lately.

As for my favorite British band: Muse, thats for sure. They dont use the now widespread Franz Ferdinand/The Killers New-Wave style, that I really dont enjoy... They choose instead to take their inspiration from grunge, Rage Against the Machine as a specific band, classical piano. And use lots of cool effects. And distortion. I like distortion...

Yea muse are really good, dunno about the darkness tho, their first album was ok.. they are pretty different to anything else atm tho.

Bust seriously, the break up of the Libertines was one of the biggest tragedies in british music. They could have been one of the greatest bands ever.. not to say that their two albums arent some of the best records of this generation.

British music is really alive atm, not in terms of mainstream pop/rock which is dominated by teeny bopper bands like McFly, but if u read magazines like NME that covers the british rock scene mainly. Certainly alot better than 5 years ago, before the indie revolution that was headed by bands like the Strokes and of course the Libertines

I have a personal hatred of the Darkness myself. The thing with them is they have immense talent, but I just really don't like the music they do. I just expressely dislike glam rock, and having them try to embody it in themselves really annoys me.

I'm just not a fan of Post-Punk Revival/New-Wave. I tend to find it too watered down for my tastes- I like bands with a bit more anger in them if you get me. They need that killer edge to them that post-punk revival/new-wave doesnt really have in my eyes.

Yea, Arctic Monkeys are biggest band of this year. They are quite a good indie rock/pop band (whatever u call them) and many are hailing them to be one of the biggest bands britain have produced. You cant go out these days without hearing something from their debute album, which is the biggest selling album (in the first week) ever in Britain. They arent all that great tho, i seen them live and i would just say they were just good. Im arguing that Babyshambles are the current best British band

Btw, has anyone watched any of the videos i posted, cos ive not heard any opinions on em yet

The Arctic Monkeys are good- I really like their style, but they are unbelievably overrated. They are not as amazing as everyone thinks. And would it kill them to stop releasing every song on the album as a single? Really, one of the corner stones of their success was that they resisted the mainstream by doing things themselves for a while, but now they've been grabbed by the mainstream they are fast becoming sellouts. They're going to burn up at the rate they're going...

The best current British band is either Bal-Sagoth or Bolt Thrower

    Nothing else comes close.

Well, of the British bands I've seen so far (Bloc Party, the Editors, Graham Coxon, Franz) all are damn good, especially Bloc Party, and Franz was a pretty awesome gig. Didn't get to see the Arctic Monkey's when they played locally, but they're very good, if overhyped. As for Doherty, he's pretty good, but not the colossal talent some paint him as. My personal tip as a great british band (not the best, but very good) are The Rakes. I already saw them once, supporting FF, but I'm going to see them again next monday.

I listened to  Forever, but I have to say its just not my thing. It's just another post-punk revival song to me...nothing hugely special in my eyes. Hey! Everyone likes something different at the end of the day!

There is one band that sticks in my mind as the best, and have been for a while. I am of course talking about the mighty Iron Maiden.

With a new album and world tour late in the year, I'm sure they'll be showing some of these younger bands how its done.
