    But you could even try

    'The New Empire of Diocletian and Constantine'. T.D. Barnes, Harvard University Press, 1982.

    But remember that somone (just a poor ****ing f-word), could say I'm always quoting my old texts of the last century.

    Diocletian and the Roman Recovery is actually still recommended reading. Don't know about the other one though.

    Yes, happy birthday to the great Diocletian without whom the empire may not have survived as long as it did. And yes, Diocletian and the Roman Recovery is very good. There is a great chapter on the religions of the third century and gives a good analysis between the religion of the State and personal salvation religions like Christianity and Mithrasism.
