Default Chronic SATA problems & Monitor no display/power light blinking

    Hi guys,

My computer's condition is bothering me lately. I had a new HD installed for my PC recently, but weeks after using it without any problems, it began to act wonky: the computer can boot up succesfully but it will began to hang and eventually crash, after a few resets, it began to only display the Win XP icon splash screen. BUT I can fix that by unplugging and re-plugging both ends of the SATA wire inside my CPU, the problem it chronically happens (like maybe 2-4 days a week) AND on top of that, once I fixed the thing the monitor opens up, but it doesn't display anything and the power light is blinking instead of just staying alight(I know I fixed the XP splash screen problem even if the monitor won't open coz I can hear the orgasmic XP sound when it boots to the desktop) . I can fix it by just shutting the PC down and waiting for about 10-15 minutes, but now, the monitor won't display anything even if I have left it overnight!

Well I can live with always unplugging and replugging the SATA, what I don't want is the monitor acting strange, its been mine for about 2 years so I don't really know what is the problem.

Please help guys, either on my SATA problem or monitor problem, or even better if both. Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer.

Actually what comes to mind first isn't a bad SATA connection but a dying CMOS battery. You say you've had that system for 2+ years now? I'd expect a battery to last longer than that but maybe switching it out would solve your problems.

wThanks for the insight PoleCat! But the one that is +2 years already is the monitor and not the system itself. Anyway, thanks and at least I have a lead. That CMOS battery is waaaay old!.

    Thanks and +rep!

The only problem now is the monitor. As I said, it only recently acted wonky and I'm puzzled until now. I read some solutions about it on the net and even asked someone personally what is wrong with it. Both said the same problem and solution; faulty power supply is the problem and the solutions are either: shutdown the PC and wait for about 10-15 mins. (the fellow I asked said only 2 mins.) or if its still not working.. unplug and replug all of the sockets connected to the monitor, or do both methods. Anyway, its working until yesterday when it happened again. I tried to do all the solutions given to me but without success, I actually can't get it to work since yesterday, I don't have a clue what to do.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer and +rep for him or her!

Do you know off hand what brand PSU you have? Since the system isn't working right now the only option to test the voltages is to get out a voltage reader and test the leads yourself. If you can't do this or don't have a reader then the best bet is to take the system to a mom and pop computer store and let them do the test for you.

Here are some things i would try:

    1) I know it sounds really basic and stupid but its happened to me countless times - plug your monitor into the right socket:

Note that the socket to the left of the fan is NOT the right one, the correct one is the socket below the fan.

    2) If this doesnt work, try swapping the monitors power cable for a new one, sometimes they stop functioning for whatever reason

    3) If youve been playing around with any internal wires then make sure that they are all plugged in properly and securely. I dont know what type of PC you have so i cant say exactly how it should be but if you have your owners manual you can check up on that, also im sure you could find it online

    4) Id try what PoleCat recommended as well. If none of those things are it then it could be a problem with the monitor itself, in which case youd have to get a new one
Hopefully not....Ill help you in any way i can though
