    Default phalanx/shieldwall fatigue

i was just wondering how this is going to be handled, especially if your using the true overhand sheildwall. from all that ive read it seems alot of these battles had much less to do with the amount of deaths accumulated and more to do with the level of fatique of one side or the other, or the fact that one gets pushed off the battlefield.

for one thing you would probably have to make the battles last alot longer with few casualties. just curious as how you are going to do this, since the current engine supports a more roman style heavy casualty way of fighting , while the greeks were much different.

I don't think its avoidable that we will have some non-greek methods of fighting in there. There is alot of evidence to suggest that the Spartans and other Greeks tried not to kill too many enemies after they were routed- they thought it was dishonourable, which in some ways it is. However, this is a game, so nobody will feel any remorse about strampling little fake soliders. Thus historical inaccuracy on account of the player.

In your case, it is certainly true that it was extremely difficult to fight in the hoplite armor- which is why it was later reformed. However it cannot be denied that casualties were lower when your suit made you iron man, although you were still vunerable at the neck, groin, upper arms, thighs, face (with open helmet models) etc. The Greeks, they say, rarely did anything athletic which did not pertain to war, an example of which was the hoplon footrace. So long as you were running competitively, why not get better at maintaining your stamina in a charge?

If you think about it though, this is already well represented. The hoplite does not have an attack much greater than your standard rtw solider, but has much better armor and defense values and, as a heavy soldier, much less stamina.

true, true. i just imagine how it works in the BI system where those who can form shieldwall tend to tire out very quickly, espeically when fighting and moving in the shieldwall formation.

I think it is doubtful that we use the shield wall at this point but it could happen still. We'll see.
